Mardy Fish now moves to 0-2 in round robin play with a second loss this week, this time at the hands of Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
After an entertaining and tight opening set, American Mardy Fish fell apart to give Jo-Wilfried Tsonga his first win of the week. Tsonga lost to Roger Federer in round-robin play on Sunday.
Both Tsonga and Fish have good first serves, which makes the four breaks in the first set somewhat surprising. Tsonga was the player and pulled ahead both times in the set, but Fish held together mentally to earn the break back twice, the second time when Tsonga was serving for the set at 5-4.
Fish looked like he was going to make a comeback in the second. The American got the break advantage immediately on a dismal game from Tsonga, but it was the last game Fish would win in the match.
Leading 1-0, Fish allowed errors to creep into his game. Tsonga got the break back, and with increasing frustration for the American, he proceeded to reel off the next five games.
Tsonga will take on Rafael Nadal in the last of the Group B round-robin matches on Thursday.
