  • Murray withdraws from London, Tipsarevic in

    11/22/11 6:08 PM | Ricky Dimon
Murray withdraws from London, Tipsarevic in Andy Murray pulls out of the World Tour Finals on Tuesday, one day after losing to David Ferrer in round-robin play. Janko Tipsarevic takes Murray's place in Group A.

A groin strain has forced Andy Murray to withdraw from the World Tour Finals. Murray, who was upset by David Ferrer in Monday round-robin action, called a press conference on Tuesday evening to announce his decision.

The third-ranked Scot said he sustained the injury in pre-tournament practice and he did not look 100 percent in a 6-4, 7-5 loss to Ferrer.

"I was probably going to do myself more damage," Murray said of continuing in London. "Australia is only six weeks away."

World No. 9 and first alternate Janko Tipsarevic replaces Murray in round-robin Group A. Tipsarevic will face familiar foe Tomas Berdych on Wednesday. Berdych was the other Monday loser, going down to Novak Djokovic in a third-set tiebreaker.

Shame!

So does Tipsy actually have a chance to qualify for the semi or just to play spoiler?

RickyDimon , 11/22/11 6:23 PM

Quelle dommage.

Thanks Ricky. Just to clarify my above comment before the knives come out :

I meant it's a shame that Murray had to withdraw, especially with this being a home event.

Whose `knives` are you fearing Numero?
Muzz fans are a bit more reasonable than that.

Sosueme , 11/22/11 6:30 PM

Well I am happy for Tipsy.... but somehow I was thinking about Fish to go out... not Muzza...
Sos... deuce... alex... it's not easy but...heads up, it will be better:))

zare , 11/22/11 6:41 PM

I've just put £100,000 on Tipsy to win the whole shebang Zare!
Based on your glowing recommendations of-course.
I hope I won't be disappointed by them!

Sosueme , 11/22/11 7:39 PM

tipsaravic has to win both matches and hope that berdych beats ferrer or if ferrer beats berdych he also beats djokovic becoz if djokovic ferrer tipsaravic all have 4 points tipsaravic wont be able to qualify even a single loss for tipsaravic means crashing out

Murray has cost Tipsarevic a fair chance and given Ferrer the advantage (he actually probably needs it). Murray again succumbed to injury and a letdown to the home fans.. Murray is always gonna be a 'never was'!

Get well soon Muzza, wise move......................

@CH3873125

sosueme, A bit touchy are we...

bleck , 11/23/11 2:27 PM

bleck, A bit dumb are we...

Sosueme , 11/23/11 2:41 PM

^^ Insecure is what I'd call it, Sos.

Tipsarevic is hammering Berdych right now. Now I'd really like to know whether Ferrer and Berdych are slotted to play before Nole vs Tipsy on Friday :D Because if Tipsy and Nole win today, and Berdych wins early on Friday, Nole could afford to be a little generous and pull his mate tthrough to the semis. :P Of course, Sienna and bleck would then have a field day.

samprallica , 11/23/11 3:53 PM

Ah T Bird pulled it off. He must really hate Serbian players and third set tiebreakers :D

samprallica , 11/23/11 5:43 PM

zare - thanks, but muzz did the right thing. Probably shouldn't have played in the first place, but then the home support deserved him at least trying.
Hopefully this will just increase muzz's hunger for Oz
2012 has to be the year (although I've said that the last 2 years ...)
