Confident Roger Federer is doing without the services this week of longtime fitness trainer Pierre Paganini, who left for home from London's World Tour Finals as soon as group play began.
The reason: the Swiss guru believes that his 30-year-old client is top-fit and needs no more help on the physical front during the remainder of the last event of the long ATP season.
The uber-fit Federer is the only player in the Top four not carrying an injury - or at least speaking of a niggle or two.
While Novak Djokovic says his delicate right shoulder is doing better, Rafael Nadal came unto the competition fragile and is recovering from a bout of food poisoning or stomach virus which nearly derailed his opening match against Mardy Fish.
Andy Murray is the latest casualty, losing his first match with a previous groin injury and withdrawing from the tournament.
Not so for Federer, who seems to be able to pace himself with precision as he bids for a record sixth year-end trophy.
"Nothing is different," the 16-time Grand Slam champion said of Paganini's absence from London after staying only a few days. "He was supposed to leave earlier but his flight got cancelled (fog).
"I was like, 'What are you doing, stay for one more day,' which he did. He only comes to let's just say, six events a year. Then occasionally if I'm in a Grand Slam final, like Paris, he would maybe show up for that.
"When he feels there's no more to do during a tournament because it's all tournament rhythm, matches, rest, all that stuff, for him there's no point to stay here and he goes, does other things."
Like his personal physio, who is reportedly forbidden by his boss to ever speak with media, Federer keeps a tight rein on Paganini. But the fitness expert is in no danger of revealing any secrets. "He likes to stay away from the limelight," said Federer. "It's kind of good this way for both of us."

Federer is truly a tennis genius and it shows time and time again.
Others, nadal, djokovic, are also great tennis players but rely on stamina and physical prowess. Roger doesn't have to use that because he is arguably the most talented player ever to hold a racquet.
Thta's why he's still able to play at this high level despite being vastly past his prime.

Vastly past his prime is a bit of an exaggeration. You make it sound as if he were coming out of retirement. lol. In a way I suppose he has since we have not seen the likes of last night's match from him in a long while.
