  • Group A - Murray faces Ferrer

    11/21/11 4:24 AM | Kelli DeMario
Group A - Murray faces Ferrer World No. 3 Andy Murray will be in singles action Friday afternoon, looking to win his first match at the ATP World Tour Finals. The Scot is set for a ninth career meeting with world No. 5 David Ferrer.

Third seed Andy Murray leads fifth seed David Ferrer 5-3 in the series. The 24-year-old carries a 5-0 hard-court advantage into Monday’s match.

Murray enters into the tournament with some momentum after securing late-season title-winning runs in Bangkok, Tokyo and Shanghai. The Scot is twice a semifinalist in London, having made the final four in 2008 and 2010.

He is bidding for his 57th match victory this year.

Ferrer will be making his third appearance at the Finals, where he finished runner-up to Roger Federer in 2007. The 29-year-old veteran looks to record his 57th win in 2011.

    Prediction: Murray in straight sets.

Murray is getting true some balls I only saw from Rafa a few years ago. Rafa doesnot get to those kind of balls anymore Murray can. But Ferrer is in with a tiny shout now after the breakback,

Sienna , 11/21/11 3:50 PM

but quality is also not very high. tThey can play better. The court maybe?

Sienna , 11/21/11 3:52 PM

I think Murray is trying to emmulate Nole's style of play.

nadline , 11/21/11 4:11 PM

set Ferrer

RickyDimon , 11/21/11 4:18 PM

Whats the matter with him THIS time?
Jeez, life would have been so much easier if i had been a Fed or Rafa fan.
Maybe not this week however.

Sosueme , 11/21/11 4:21 PM

Did murray or ferrer injure themselves?
It's just that there was this weird time lapse where the live score didn't register anything.

bleck , 11/21/11 4:27 PM

sosueme, it's hard to be fans of any of the top four this tournament. The other four top eight guys are trying hard here to make an impression, so nothing will come easy for the top four. I expect Berdych to give Nole a hard time too.

luckystar , 11/21/11 4:29 PM

Murray took a long MTO after 1st set and Ferrer took a Nadal

RickyDimon , 11/21/11 4:31 PM

YuK hamstring, elbow, God knows!
Should've skipped Paris too!

deuce , 11/21/11 4:44 PM

And perhaps the WTF as well Deuce!

Sosueme , 11/21/11 4:54 PM

I can't see this one, I'm using the ATP scoreboard is Andy injured?

Sosueme , 11/21/11 5:06 PM

Sosueme, had MTO very unusual so I think yes. Serve is off, having an awful day at the office, BUT must start winning these matches! Grrrrrr

deuce , 11/21/11 5:15 PM

At this rate I'm going with Berdych v. Ferrer and Fish v. Tsonga for the SFs.

Final: Ferrer over Tsonga

ed251137 , 11/21/11 5:17 PM

Can someone please tell me WTF just happened?
Whats the problem now?
He probably wont get to the semis now even if he does sort himself out.
Oh & congrats to Daveeed!
It's been emotional!

Sosueme , 11/21/11 5:20 PM

Well played from that little metronome Ferrer.
Awful from Andy, can only assume it's injury. Looked as if he didn't want to be out there.
ed Agree! Place your bets please.

deuce , 11/21/11 5:23 PM

"At this rate I'm going with Berdych v. Ferrer and Fish v. Tsonga for the SFs.

Final: Ferrer over Tsonga"

Hate to be a bit picky, but berdych/ferrer and fish/tsonga are in the same group, so they can't meet in the semis. but I get your point :)

tj600 , 11/21/11 5:24 PM

Everyone has a bad day at the office, eh!

Congrats to Daveed.

nadline , 11/21/11 5:24 PM

ednumbers Fish replaced by Federer and you might be right,

Sienna , 11/21/11 5:25 PM

So Ferrer did not want to lose all his WTF matches this year ... bit brutal for Andy, though.

smr , 11/21/11 5:30 PM

WTF..............

rafaisthebest , 11/21/11 5:32 PM

Sienna none of the top 4 that we've seen so far has been remotely impressive.
It's the walking wounded out there.
Ofcourse Andy has to take it so much further.

Sosueme , 11/21/11 5:33 PM

Sosueme, Sky commentators saying he couldn't put pressure on his leg so movement and serve impaired. Glutes, hamstring? Wonder if he'll withdraw?
Bye, bye No3, it was good while it lasted :(

deuce , 11/21/11 5:36 PM

Deuce,
Maybe he could attach a pair of wheels to his legs like some of the overly sentimental owners of crippled cats & dogs do?
You know, instead of putting them to sleep?
And flushing them down the toilet!
: )

Sosueme , 11/21/11 5:47 PM

Ferrer over Tipsarevic in the final

RickyDimon , 11/21/11 5:52 PM

Deuce

No. 3 doesn't matter either for fed or murray!!

matter for fans only!!

mani4Tennis , 11/21/11 5:54 PM

This was way too easy for Ferrer. Murray a crowd favorite in his own backyard, against a Clay courter who has struggled in recent weeks indoors. Murray serves horribly and seems to have an undisclosed injury all of a sudden...best returner has a weak return performance against a weak Ferrer serve.

I think we have a Davydenko in the making here. Very suspect opening match for Murray...who has owned Ferrer on hard courts.

CH3873125 , 11/21/11 5:55 PM

Tom over Jerry in the final!

Sosueme , 11/21/11 5:59 PM

Correction, Itchy over Scratchy in the Final.

Are you saying `chnumbers` that Ferrer shall pull off a Davydenko this year?!

Sosueme , 11/21/11 6:05 PM

CH3873125, injury was not "all of a sudden." Made him withdraw from Basle and aggravated at Paris, I guess. Andy mentioned it last week, also elbow niggle.
mani4tennis, As it was Andy's year end goal, it blooming well does matter *sobbing*.

deuce , 11/21/11 6:07 PM

There, There, Deucey,
It could have been worse,
He could have lost to Donald Young again : )

Sosueme , 11/21/11 6:11 PM

Davydenko is in reference to Murray...I think I he pulled up lame in this match intentionally. If you're injured you need to withdraw. Especially since you have more matches in round robin. Does he think he is going to get better as the tournament continues and luck into a win against the other top 7. Very suspect indeed!!!

CH3873125 , 11/21/11 6:12 PM

I still don't get your consipiracy theory CH,
Murray lost due to the fact he was S$&T nothing more.
Its not in his dna to do what you have said.
And now he may be out, so there goes the Mr Evil master plan.
Also,
ELVIS LIVES!!!!!

Sosueme , 11/21/11 6:28 PM

Cookie Monster over Big Bird in the final

RickyDimon , 11/21/11 6:31 PM

Is that Rafa vs Berdych, Ricky?

smr , 11/21/11 6:36 PM

You only gotta lose once for the ppl who put their 'faith' in you or your opponent to get the big payout. His DNA is someone who doesn't like to be paid? I mean let's face it, this is not a slam and that is the real goal for Murray, not this 'exhibition'. Do you think Davydenko takes pride in his WTF championship a few years ago? No one outside of the sport even remembers that...

CH3873125 , 11/21/11 6:41 PM

If someone pulls out at this stage, what happens, do the players in his group get a W/O?

nadline , 11/21/11 6:44 PM

smr - no, those are sesame street characters

RickyDimon , 11/21/11 6:50 PM

No Tipsaravic joins the parade.

foxy knoxy over that italian prosecutor in the final

0-6 6-1 6-0!

Sosueme , 11/21/11 6:52 PM

So can Tipsa join even after the first round has been completed and one of the players pulls out?

nadline , 11/21/11 6:57 PM

mmm thats a good question, maybe he shall inherit Andy's "results" going on.
Now THAT would be funny!

Sosueme , 11/21/11 7:01 PM

Sounds like Tipsy maybe getting his racquets ready ... Andy's injury not sounding good.

smr , 11/21/11 7:07 PM

If you are a top 8 player this year, you shouldn't be making injury excuses going into the WTF. If you've had nagging injuries, you should even have taken the invite and pull a pathetic performance right off the bat. Now if he pulls out...it gives the other one in his group an advantage in moving on, and leaves Tipsarevic out of an opportunity to actually compete. This classlessness and lack of intelligence is why Murray will never win a legitimate slam...(only maybe if Rafa, Nole, or Roger are all hurt at the same time...)

CH3873125 , 11/21/11 7:15 PM

CH3873125 vs Sienna for the final.

smr , 11/21/11 7:18 PM

Ignoring the above in ed's newly established best tradition.
At press conference it's a groin injury and Andy decides tomorrow whether to pull out.
Sosueme, I cannot be comforted *sobbing worse and worse" flooding site now.

deuce , 11/21/11 7:21 PM

I'll bagel and breadstick cookie monster and jerry!

CH3873125 , 11/21/11 7:23 PM

Apparently a classy person like ch38 has never experienced an injury before!
Its only classless people that have problems with their groins etc.
And when they do its all their own fault if they don't time their injuries appropriately. Like a swiss clock maybe?
Perhaps you want to take a step back for a second and actually THINK about what you are SAYING chnumbers.
Because it is uncalled for, unfair & quite, quite ridiculous.

Sosueme , 11/21/11 7:30 PM

Seriously these have been some safe predictions from Cheryl. All favorites, all straight victories, none have done anything close to that! Im going out on a limb and say Berdych in a three set victory with two tiebreakers against Nole! It's not like he needs it...he has three slams this year!

CH3873125 , 11/21/11 7:32 PM

Muscle injuries are lack of conditioning, ignorance in conditioning, and mental weaknesses which Murray obviously exhibit. But I'm not even faulting Murray for getting injured, if in fact he is. It's the lack of not pulling out before the WTF even started. If you're injured going into a year end final and you don't even acknowledge it until after you get beat, that making your injury your excuse. If you know you are not good enough to compete, dont deprive other a chance at competing like Murray has done to Tipsarevic. This wasn't three or four matches into the tournament, it's the first darn set! This is an Exclusive event! If you are a top 8 player, you deserve to get scrutinized like a Top 8 player! I'll say the same thing about Nole, if he pulls up lame in the first set of his match against Berdych!

CH3873125 , 11/21/11 7:46 PM

Coria over Gaudio in the final... after Gaudio misses countless chances.. 0-6 7-6 7-6 :-)

Bonker , 11/21/11 7:47 PM

*Kelli's predictions

CH3873125 , 11/21/11 7:52 PM

Okay chnumbers...
This IS apparently, a NEW injury unforseen (in the groin area). I
ts the end of the year remember.
Not like the Novak shoulder scenario.
He had some niggles with his shoulder & glut previously that were under control.
Your diatribe was prejudiced, uninformed & YES.
Rather Classless.

Sosueme , 11/21/11 7:54 PM

It's your opinion...and u have the right as I do. I still from my previous opinion believe Murray was influence by an outsider to take part in this match and finish it knowing he might very well not put in a decent effort, and chances are that outsider/investor was a Ferrer fan on this day...

CH3873125 , 11/21/11 8:13 PM

Actually I'll give you a slight break on this chnumbers,
The new injury was reportedly incurred in Paris not here in London.
Still I'm glad he gave it a try at least as Tipsarivic is no real substitute for the event.

Sosueme , 11/21/11 8:14 PM

What happened in the match? I didn't get to see it. I will get to see the replay later on, but I was curious. Does Andy have some kind of injury?

This is one crazy tournament. Now we will have to see if Nole is okay. Predictions should just go out the window.

Nativenewyorker , 11/21/11 8:28 PM

no they shouldn't NNY

Elvis over Micky Mouse in the final

6-0 1-6 7-6

Sosueme , 11/21/11 8:34 PM

sosueme, now he's saying he got it in practise and played because he didn't know how it would pan out. Make decision tomorrow. He's got to withdraw, I'd think. It stopped him moving, serving etc and Ferrer was the easiest of the bunch....
"Sobbing uncontrollably now* was it Alice who floated away on her tears......just call me Alice ....

deuce , 11/21/11 8:49 PM

deuce,

I still don't know what is going on with Murray. If you are too upset to explain it, I will understand. I am very sorry for you and please don't cry too much.

Nobody is telling me anything. Do I have to read all the comments on this thread to find out what happened? I thought he was fine.

I cannot believe this. Please tell me he won't have to pull out.

Nativenewyorker , 11/21/11 8:55 PM

alright alright NNY
It was a groin injury the rest as above.
The trainer was called on etc. Play was terrible serve etc.
He's done for the year.

Sosueme , 11/21/11 9:00 PM

Sosueme,

So there is no way that he can continue? I read on another forum that he won't make a decision about withdrawing until tomorrow.

I am sorrier than sorry for you, deuce, alex and ed. I am also fond of Murray and would have loved to see him win this thing.

I don't know what else to say.

Nativenewyorker , 11/21/11 9:33 PM

We will know by tomorrow if Murray will pull out if he is not seen on the practice courts not unless he decides to practice off site.

My guess is that he will not pull out.

nadline , 11/21/11 10:08 PM

If Tipsy has to come on are the other reserves lined up? In 2008 when Roddick pulled out injured after two matches they ended up with Stepanek who was I think ranked No. 14. At least London is a bit easier to get to than Shanhai.

ed251137 , 11/21/11 11:06 PM

that is just terrible to see Andy injured...he sure did not seem like an injured person in his pre-WTF-match interviews...and I thought he looked pretty happy and content on the practice courts...I am so sorry for Andy...But I still believe he will not give up and he will decide to play....I wish our favorites are healthy...is it too much to ask?!...
