World No. 5 David Ferrer made a successful start at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, having upended world No. 3 Andy Murray in straight sets. The veteran recorded his first hard-court victory over the Scot early Monday.
Fifth seed David Ferrer won his first match of the tournament by virtue of his straight-set defeat of third seed Andy Murray. The 2007 finalist came through the opener in two hours and one minute, 6-4, 7-5.
Murray, who looked to be struggling with his legs, led 2-1 in the first set and 2-0 in the second. The 24-year-old was unable to hold the lead, as unforced errors continued to derail his effort. After winning the opening set, Ferrer drew level at 4-4 in set two. The Spaniard held match point at 6-5, then closed with a cross-court backhand winner.
"I'm very happy," said Ferrer. "I beat Andy, in London, in his home. It is not easy. I played very consistent all the match. Maybe the first set I played better than the second, (because) in the second (set), sometimes I was a little bit nervous.
"I think it was important to start winning the match and if you win in two sets it is better with the group (standings). You know you need to win one more match, because (it) is very difficult to reach the semi-finals winning only one match. I think this tournament is very, very special. It is very important."
Ferrer completed the day with five aces and five of 10 break points converted.

He told the press he pulled something in practice, I think. Real pity- Tuesday we'll know if he's withdrawing.

Congrats to Ferrer for the win. At least he didn't choke away his win. Among the four guys from 5-8, he's the most experienced and most steady, held his nerve and finished the job, unlike the other three.

When I said to Cheryl I wouldn't mind Tipsarevic in Andy's half of the draw, I didn't mean INSTEAD of Andy, for goodness sake! The tennis gods must have hearing problems.
Be careful of what you wish for, is all I can say...:(

Do NOT make the problem worse, Muzza...............withdraw if you have to, there are bigger fish to fry round the corner..................
rafaisthebest , 11/22/11 8:57 AM
luckystar, Berdych did have match point and could've easily won the match. As for tsonga and fish they took it to a 3rd set I don't see why the "should" have finished the job. Roger won 6-4 in the 3rd set in which tsonga didn't have a single BP. So tsonga wasn't even close to winning that match let alone "finishing the job".
Fish was closer though as he lead the 3rd set with a break but choked it righ in the next game, typical.

bleck,
You posted this same comment in the "Djokovic ready to defend his 2011 honors" blog. So why are you posting the same thing over here again? Not sure that enough people will see it?
Lucky and I were giving our thoughts on the respective matches, Ferrer/Murray, Fed/Tsonga and Rafa/Fish, yet you felt the need to jump in to let us know how wrong we were.
You are beating this to death. People are allowed to have different opinions than you.

NNY, I wrote similar posts responding to similar posts written by luckystar on both threads.
Stay well.
bleck , 11/22/11 10:20 AM
bleck just want to argue for the sake of arguing. I've responded on the other thread. Breaking an opponent's serve first does not constitute having a chance to win the match, when the score is 3-2, and the player concerned is playing erratically. Rafa proved my point by promptly breaking back. Sometimes I doubt bleck's objectivity while watching matches, especially when it involved Fed and Rafa.
Among the three guys- Berdych, Tsonga and Fish - it's obvious Berdych had the best chance to win. Did he have a MP against Nole, I may have missed that out. Tsonga vs Fed, they were on serve until the last game. To me Tsonga played better than Fish, because his opponent, Fed played better than Rafa. Tsonga choked only when he's serving to stay in the match. Compare that to Fish, Fish was able to level the match at 2-2 in the third set because of Rafa's condition after the toilet break. Fish might have choked more than Tsonga, and was facing MPs before he managed to reach the tiebreak. Playing so erratically and facing MPs against a subpar Rafa, I don't see him having better chance than Tsonga in winning their respective matches.

AndyMs got a groin strain which effected his backhand in game against DavidF. He'll decide after practice tomorrow whether or not to continue. If he continues he'd have to beat Berdych and Djoko to have a chance of winning. If he pulls out (I think he should and give himself time to be fully fit for the A/O) Tipsarevic will take his place.

sorry folks, just read ALL the post and realise Id just repeated what others had written, pays to read before you type, lol!
mojo , 11/22/11 2:24 PM
Thank god tipsarevic doesn't tend to bend over for djokovic like a certain troicki.
But you never know.

f*&K, F*)K, FU*K & Double f*&K.
Still, better than risking anything chronic.
WTF is nothing more than an old whorehouse anyhoo, nobody gives a damn!
Okay, I might be just a little bit disppointed & bitter at the moment :-)

"WTF is nothing more than an old whorehouse anyhoo, nobody gives a damn!"
Yeah sosueme but being #3 in the world is one of the biggest achievements according to you know who.
P.S.:Murray let the tennis do the talking and the speech wasn't very eloquent. lol
bleck , 11/22/11 8:02 PM
Wow bleck, that's a nasty remark. Talk about kicking someone when they're down. Andy is INJURED remember.
deuce , 11/22/11 8:16 PM
Deuce this is a particular thing I and sosueme have. We jest each other and throw a couple of cheap shots at each other every now and then.
this just seemed the perfect opportunity.
Deuce murray's big objective is winning a grand slam so as long as he's healthy for the AO that's all that matters. As for the WTF it would've been nice but it's not a slam.
I can only imagine what sosueme will throw at me should Roger lose the upcoming match. lol
Sorry deuce.
bleck , 11/22/11 8:27 PM
deuce,
I just read the news here. I am beyond sorry about this, but you and Andy's fans have to know that it's best for him. His health is the most important thing. I am sure he is even more disappointed than his fans. This tournament means so much because it is his home.
Andy can now look forward to 2012 and the AO. Look to the future and be happy that he has played such great tennis.
You must know that Rafa fans like myself have gone through this too many times. Be strong and of good cheer and know that Andy will live to fight another day.
You are in my thoughts.
Commiserations to all of Andy's loyal fans - ed, alex and Sosueme.
Nativenewyorker , 11/22/11 8:45 PM
OK bleck, nice apology, accepted.
NNY thank you :) I'm really pleased he's pulled out as a matter of fact. Needs to get healthy for 2012.

Happy for David, but what was the issue with Andy's legs? It almost looked more like a groin problem during the mto. I hope he can keep playing, but it doesn't apparently look to promising.
