Roger Federer overcame a lackluster second-set performance to defeat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in three sets 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.
Considered one of the favorites for the World Tour Finals, Roger Federer had some difficulty getting past France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in his first round robin match.
Tsonga had trouble with his first serve, especially in the first and second sets. The Frenchman served at 44% in both, but Federer was only able to take advantage in the first set.
Federer, who is ranked fourth just behind Andy Murray, came into London off wins in Basel and Paris, but his form on Sunday wasn’t quite as impressive as it had been for the rest of the month.
Tsonga turned the tables on Federer in the second set. The Swiss played a dismal set. He won just two points on Tsonga’s serve for the entire frame, even though Tsonga served at just 44%. Federer gave up a pair of breaks to allow his opponent back into the match.
The third set looked as though it would be decided in a tiebreaker as neither man managed to break until the 10th game. Tsonga served at 4-5 to stay in the match, but a shaky service game allowed Federer to dig in and get the break for the match win.
