  • Group B – Federer vs. Tsonga preview

    11/19/11 9:31 PM | Cheryl Murray
Group B – Federer vs. Tsonga preview There are no easy rounds in London, as Roger Federer takes on Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in his first round-robin match at the World Tour Finals.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has already posted two wins over Roger Federer this year, one of which came at Wimbledon, and the second at the Montreal Masters. The Swiss got his revenge against Tsonga, however, at the US Open and last week at the Paris Masters.

Beating Federer will be a tall task for Tsonga, who didn’t win a set in last week’s final. The Swiss is enjoying exceptional form at the moment, with his groundstrokes doing particular damage off the baseline. In order for Tsonga to have a chance, the unforced errors that tend to creep into the Frenchman’s game will need to be nearly eliminated.

Prediction – Federer for the win in straight sets.

Federer in routine straights

RickyDimon , 11/20/11 1:57 AM

Tsonga is a wuss...................

rafaisthebest , 11/20/11 4:23 AM

I don't know that I would call him a wuss. I just think there are limits to his game. He is not as smart as Fed and that serve has to be working for him to have any chance against any of the top players. It just seems that Fed is in such good form that he won't have a chance.

Nativenewyorker , 11/20/11 4:34 AM

It's the over-exhuberance that does Tsonga in, and that what frustrates me about him. Granted, he is not in the Nole/Rafa/Fed/Muzza class but I think he has the game to trouble them.................if only he would concentrate on each point (like they do) instead of playing to the gallery so much. He relies too much on the energy from the crowd. I think he needs to do less of this and more of concentrating on each point in the game.....................

rafaisthebest , 11/20/11 5:04 AM

He, and Monfils too, love the big arena matches but for the next few days I'm rather hoping JWT continues to play to the gallery :-)

ed251137 , 11/20/11 11:25 AM

If routine sets include a breaker then ok.

Sienna , 11/20/11 12:52 PM

I don't see any of the matches at the WTF to be routine...Tsonga is going to be motivated and he will do his best...and Tsonga still has a chance even if he loses today as he can easily beat Fish and then he has to clash with Rafa and you never know which Rafa may turn up...Tsonga's game can more trouble Fish and Rafa than Fed...Fed is going to beat Tsonga easily if he plays the way he played the last two tournaments...if Fed for any reason starts making UEs then it may end up to be a close match with Fed as a winner of course...

natashao , 11/20/11 1:13 PM

pathetic match to say the least..is this a top 8 player match?lol

i mean Fed doesnt even have to play a shot..Tsonga cant put a ball in the court..its that bad..Look at his body language..he has no energy in his body

sanju , 11/20/11 3:49 PM

Well thisis really a first setand nothing routine about Fed6-2 and he is killing it.

Vegen noemen we dat in nederland. In dutch it is called to whipe or sweap the opponent of the court.

Sienna , 11/20/11 3:49 PM

Go Fed..wrap it in like 45 mns..Tsonga deserves to be humiliated if this is the way he plays n a WTF..really bad start to the quality of play in WTF

sanju , 11/20/11 3:50 PM

Sienna - routine straights do often include a breaker, as they did in Paris

RickyDimon , 11/20/11 3:55 PM

Tsonga with his back against the wall is dangerous. Roger should know this and hehas put him in the atch. break down and this is a match. Unnecessery

Sienna , 11/20/11 3:58 PM

Tsonga has woken up, taking the 2nd set 6.2

nadline , 11/20/11 4:18 PM

Wasn't this supposed to be a straight sets romp for Fed? Didn't Tsonga get the script?

rafaisthebest , 11/20/11 4:22 PM

The first person to break takes the match.

nadline , 11/20/11 4:31 PM

Good shout Ricky Dimon, astute as usual

willmw101 , 11/20/11 4:36 PM

You dont often see RF looking rattled but he serving first in the 3rd should come to his rescue. Besides Mirka is looking quite relaxed which is a sure sign he is on course in spite of the 2nd set.

ed251137 , 11/20/11 4:37 PM

Tsonga now down 30-40 in the 6th game. He is toast.

nadline , 11/20/11 4:39 PM

I spoke too soon. 3-3 in the 3rd set.

nadline , 11/20/11 4:41 PM

Pity I can't like comments here!

firozjehangir , 11/20/11 4:46 PM

RickyDimon , 11/20/11 4:48 PM

Make or break time coming up. If it goes to a tie break the money has to be on Federer.

ed251137 , 11/20/11 4:49 PM

Rafa in the audience watching the Fed-Tsonga match

sanju , 11/20/11 4:50 PM

Wonder who Rafa was rooting for..wonder why he was in the audience..any guesses?

sanju , 11/20/11 4:52 PM

To be honest..not happy with Rogers play today..too much ups n downs in the match..

sanju , 11/20/11 4:54 PM

routine

RickyDimon , 11/20/11 4:55 PM

match evenly poised...but federer should take it in the end

King henry supporting federer over his country fellow....Odd,well nice to see thierry at O2...arsenal for life...:D

vrael , 11/20/11 4:55 PM

yupieeee... Fed winsssssss... =D

tomnjerry2 , 11/20/11 4:55 PM

Believe Henry know each other from a Gilette or Nike commercial so thats probably why

SGHIceman , 11/20/11 4:58 PM

See, Fed's play is always like that, there's always some lapses especially in second sets of his matches. Again boneheaded Tsonga throws away his chances of beating Fed again. Seriously, is Tsonga a big match player??

luckystar , 11/20/11 5:00 PM

lucky, so agree with your comment! Awful last game from Tsonga! Damp squib.
Fed not looking as sharp as Paris though.

deuce , 11/20/11 5:04 PM

Yes everybody is alway putting Tsongadown. He is on the right track.I expect a move from him nest year to overtake Berdych Ferrer. I like Tsonga very much to beat an challenge those two for the #5 slot. He´ll beat Fish and it it is all in the open for this groupe. Probably the sets are counting heavily so I am not happy with a three setter. but ofcourse happy with the win against an in form player.
No see how Rafa fairs against a totally outcold Fish.

Sienna , 11/20/11 5:05 PM

And Sienna I am sure you rooting for Fish to topple Rafa? :-)

sanju , 11/20/11 5:06 PM

Federer not as sharp as in recent matches. Still it's good to see Roger fight and take the match. The set lost could be decisive so I would have prefered a staright sets victory. But a win is a win. If everything goes as planned Roger and nadal should get through to the semis with the winner of the match between both the winner of the group.

If tsonga manages to win against nadal then a player with 2 wins in the RR could still not make it to the semis.

bleck , 11/20/11 5:10 PM

@ls, sorry to see you disappointed.

Happy to see fed get through, will be sharper again to trash Rafa.

sabs , 11/20/11 5:18 PM

If everything goes as planned Roger and nadal should get through to the semis with the winner of the match between both the winner of the group.

bleck
, 11/20/11 5:10 PM

Which plan is that, pray tell?So Rafa's in the semis mix now? Most Fedfans didn't give him a prayer for the semis before the tourny!

I hope "the plan" as you put it, comes true!

rafaisthebest , 11/20/11 5:22 PM

Sabs, you serious? Fed playing like this may be thrashed by Rafa instead. Rafa is no Tsonga, certainly not boneheaded like Tsonga. No wonder Tsonga looked so pissed after the match.

I don't think Fed will play as well as he did like last year, certainly not as sharp.

luckystar , 11/20/11 5:23 PM

I said it before, and I'll say it again, Tsonga's a wuss...............

rafaisthebest , 11/20/11 5:25 PM

rafaisthebest, I don't speak for most fed fans. Also yes the plan is roger and nadal win their matches. Whta do you think it's more expected for tsonga and fish to come through??!!

You're too sensitive today. Is it just today or are you usually like that?

bleck , 11/20/11 5:29 PM

Calm down bleck, so Fed dropped a set........it's not the end of the world. LOL

Me sensitive? Don't make me laugh, mate!!! Let me give you a hint then maybe you will reconsider who is being sensitive here: A plan is not the same as an expectation, geddit?

As I said, you are upset right now so I forgive you, Fed dropping a set has sent you into a tail-spin..............

rafaisthebest , 11/20/11 5:37 PM

Like I said before, Fed isn't as good this year at the indoor events compared to last year, considering the fact that last year he played even more matches (including the Asian swing) and he beat some quality opponents along the way. This year he's well rested and his opponents did make him looked better than he really is. His second set lapses is a problem and the top three guys will capitalize on that.

sabs, I'm not disappointed as I think Rafa will beat Fish and so need not face Tsonga so soon. I want Rafa to be ready before meeting Tsonga, so that he'll beat Tsonga again..I'm not worried about this Fed, as Rafa always has his way with Fed. To me this Fed is not the one of WTF 2010, or the TMF of TMC 2006 & 2007! Let's see how Rafa performs against Fish to have a better idea.

luckystar , 11/20/11 5:37 PM

rafaisthebest, You're funny...

bleck , 11/20/11 5:42 PM

Let's hope I will still be "funny" after Rafa's match!!! Hint: if Rafa loses I will not be "funny"...........

rafaisthebest , 11/20/11 5:47 PM

Rafa in the audience watching the Fed-Tsonga match..did anyone c? wonder why he was in the audience for the match?

sanju , 11/20/11 5:55 PM

^^^^^^scoping the opposition, maybe?

rafaisthebest , 11/20/11 5:59 PM

yes rifb..maybe checking Fed n Tsongas arsenal as he plays them both next matches :-)

sanju , 11/20/11 6:10 PM

guys if Rafa wins today..whom does he play on Tuesday? Fed or Tsonga?

sanju , 11/20/11 6:11 PM

Rafa always like to watch matches of Fed and his fellow Spaniards if he has the time. His next opponent, assuming he beats Fish, will be Fed.

luckystar , 11/20/11 6:20 PM

oh my tuesday will be a cracker then if Rafa wins today :-)

I hope he beats Fish today, as facinf Fed in final match will put immense pressure on him to sneak out the win

sanju , 11/20/11 6:21 PM

"Let's hope I will still be "funny" after Rafa's match!!! Hint: if Rafa loses I will not be "funny"...........", rafaisthebest

nadal won but still I doubt you are funny beacause oh boy had fish not been a top class choker...

P.S.:nadal's lunch on tuesday - salmon, lol....

bleck , 11/21/11 9:36 AM

For Rafa to suffer food poisoning from salmon jusst before he plays 'Fish' sounds a little bit fishy to me. Looks like all the 'fish' were staying on side. Lol

I hope Rafa stays off swiss rolls and swiss cheeses before his match tomorrow. Munch on Queleys Rafa, they are on your side and stick to spanish food overall.

nadline , 11/21/11 2:04 PM

spanish food in england? The brits are not at all famous for quality trestaurants so an spanish tapin england would be wise to be rejected by Rafa. he has a delicate interior.

Sienna , 11/21/11 2:10 PM

nadal has enough money to hire a spanish chef and buy spanish ingredients.
He should have a paella.

And he should also have the chef cook some comfort food for after the match. lol
