  • Tsonga saves three MPs to outlast Isner

    11/12/11 8:19 PM | Ricky Dimon
Tsonga saves three MPs to outlast Isner Jo-Wilfried Tsonga comes back from the brink of defeat to beat John Isner in the Paris semifinals on Saturday. Tsonga will battle Roger Federer for the title.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is back in the BNP Paribas Masters final after scoring a thriller of 3-6, 7-6(1), 7-6(3) victory over John Isner on Saturday. Tsonga, the 2008 champion, saved three match points and advanced after two hours and 58 minutes of play.

Isner, who was coming off a pair of blowout wins followed by a three-set upset of David Ferrer, remained on fire to open the match. The 6'9'' American held with ease the entire way in set one and consistently tested his opponent's serve.

Tsonga survived three deuces and one break point at 1-2, but he could not get through another long service game at 2-3. After four deuces, Isner finally capitalized on his fourth break chance of the day when Tsonga sent a touch volley just wide. Isner had no trouble serving it out from there, holding at love for 5-2 then converting his second set point at 5-3, 40-30.

A far more tense and energetic second set saw Tsonga pick up the pace. The Frenchman got the crowd firmly into the match when he clawed back from near-defeat at 1-1. He battled through three deuces for a tough hold, even saving a break point after a long rally during which Tsonga got a fortunate bounce off the net cord.

Tsonga pushed Isner in just about every service game thereafter, but he missed three break chances and eventually had to play a tiebreaker. The crowd favorite promptly dominated it seven points to one, winning the final six points of the set.

Another decisive tiebreaker in the third could have been avoided, but both players failed to capitalize on a host of opportunities. Isner thwarted one break point in the opening game with an ace then battled back from a 0-40 deficit to hold at 4-4. Tsonga suddenly ran into serious trouble in a nail-biting 12th game, surviving three match points with some big forehands and a few gifts from Isner.

With momentum in hand and the fans going crazy, Tsonga again raced away in the decider. The world No. 8 seized an immediate mini-break when Isner netted a forehand and got another when his opponent double-faulted at 3-5. Tsonga wasted no timer wrapping up victory, finishing the job with a powerful forehand winner.

Isner finished his impressive run in Paris with 10 aces and three double-faults. Tsonga, who will battle Roger Federer for the title, recorded 12 aces and five double-faults while winning 84 percent of his first-serve points.

I'm almost excited to watch the title match just to see the crowds reaction...

I was thinking the same thing. They love Roger (feau french), but then Tsonga is the real deal. I'd love to see Jo-Willy take this one but he just gifts so many points from out of the blue. Ah well, que sera, sera.

Maya , 11/13/11 1:50 AM

I didn't get to watch the full match, but I must say I'm impressed with the improvement in Isner, especially his movement. The commentators mentioned that Tsonga had to win the longer rallies in order to win points, no wonder it seemed that he had to work so hard yesterday.

I really don't think he can win the final, judging by how well Fed played. He's really in TMF mode. I was truly impressed with Fed yesterday, he always seems to come alive during the indoor hard court season, also the fast outdoor hard courts. I still remember how well Fed played during Cincy 2009, literally dancing around the court. He made both Murray and Nole looked so ordinary then, in the semifinal and the final. He was also in TMF mode at last year's WTF. I think he'll be in TMF mode too, come this year's WTF, and that would be impressive, for he still can summon his TMF qualities for three consecutive years after he past his prime. Those three guys above him better watch out for TMF mode Fed, especially Murray if he still want to finish the year at no.3.

Too bad Isner choked, coz he was in most of Tsonga's games. The third game of the second set, Isner should have won that one, and he would have secured the early break, thus most likely winning the match. I can't believe how badly John chokes. He did the same this year vs. Fish at Atlanta, in a match he should have won, but the scenario played in much the same way as today.

anyway, tomorrow it's Fed's time, albeit tsonga has the crowd and also got an additional day's rest. Just hope Rog is not too tired and can pull off the win. Go Fed!

scoretracker , 11/13/11 6:30 AM

Scoretracker, seriously this is the first time I've read your post thoroughly after what I promised to skip your posts whenever I see your name. If we can post about matches like this going forward, it would be nice. Whoever we support, that shouldn't blind us from appreciating good play, be it Fedal, Nole, Murray, Berdych, Tsonga or whoever. I've refrained from posting on the Fed thread, for I would like the Fed fans to indulge in their appreciation of Fed there. I don't wish to have any war with anyone here, as long as they ( the Fed fans) don't go overboard in criticizing Rafa and his fans. I guess it works both ways, so I hope both sides can exercise some self refrain.

I enjoy watching matches and sharing our views and thoughts here about the matches and the players. If I see some players playing well, I would commend them for doing so. Regarding Isner, I feel that his game has really improved and he's no longer just a serve machine. With this SF result, he should be in the top twenty, so it's a good thing that there are now three Americans in the top twenty.

You don't control us! 'You would like us to indulge?'...like you are mother, patting our heads?

That's so rich LS, particular when you complains about anything we says, you goes to cheryl, you foolings nobody here.

You worse than most, so don't pretends.

Fleur , 11/13/11 8:47 AM

I also have a small problem with the peace negotiations LS is trying to bring upon us. We will see how the nadalfans handle LS remark. So far they have shown nothing or little of the sorts to try and obey Cheryl´s rules from last week.
But closer to a I am sorry we are not going to get from Luckystar. We can now watch the remarks hold ground.

On with todays final. Roger and Jo really deserve a final like this. Theyve had some nice matches this year. 5 I believe?

Sienna , 11/13/11 9:08 AM

Alas... Lucky... there is no point to try anything normal with these Fedtards...
I have tried... I have even tried to confort them after USO... but like hyenas and scavengers they will just turn your words...
Like their idol... they are obsessed with themselves...
This site is slowly but regularly falling apart, thanks to Fleur's mindless ranting... thanks to Sienna's sickness, hate, and powerless rage... and not to mention scoretracker.... geeeeez.... his looooooong.... booooooring posts..... like those cheep counselors, where he needs three screens to explain his twisted statement in earlier post... Unbelievable!
Back to post...
Yes, it will be very interesting to see reaction of crowd... and Fed's also. He is not happy when crowd don't favors him... His divine personality can not understand that.
Anyway I think this match will be there for Fed... just to take it... So many times he was lucky with injuries of other top ten...
We will see...
LOL... just one question for Fedfans...."Why is 23. Julie important for you?"
On press conference Fed was confused ... he needed some time to remember...
... birthday of his twins.... hilarious!
That guy has mind only for himself... hahaha...

zare , 11/13/11 9:34 AM

It doesn't matter zare, I've stated my stand. Posters here can see for themselves who are the usual ones who are doing all the provoking. Sometimes I feel they can't live without provoking others. I'll do as I said, the rest is up to the others. I don't represent others, I can only represent myself. As long as posters like scoretracker is posting about matches, I can post my response if I wish, any other things I won't bother with.

I'm only interested in tennis matches and also my few favorite players. I'm not going to drag myself into all these pointless fan wars till no end and waste my time over it. I'm looking forward to the WTF, wondering when the draw will be done.

luckystar , 11/13/11 10:08 AM

Dear zare, you are back with more rage and rantings! Hello to you, hey hey zare.

So what a strangest question? Why is 23 Julie important for you?

I think firstly who is Julie? I wonder? ummmmh..you may mean July?, so if you talks like this and it's Julie, no surprises eh? and if photographer came to you and says zare, what does number 16 mean to you? You may think, ummmm grand slams? how many pizzas I gave to ball boys, how many times I practised this morning.

Got to be mention zare, it was a stupid question from photographer. Stupid. What does 23 means to you? Could be SF continuing in slams, anything. She was obviously broody.

I hope he has mind for himself, being top athlete on court, important to be selfish here.

Fleur , 11/13/11 10:53 AM

Luckystar. You choose to answer Zare and not look at her low comments about the twins.
Isnotthat part of you peace proposal. Fleur and I only brought question up from where you come. You are as much part of the problem as others have been. Zare obveiously is also a person with issues about Fed. How can you ask something from us and let his behaviour unscaled by you.
If you can do the talking you must show the actions you take to live up to youre promisfull comment. I will see how this turns out.

Sienna , 11/13/11 11:07 AM

sienna, I'm not the moderator here, I don't need to read through all posts. I don't even know what this 23 Julie is all about. Not everyone knows everything about Fed. Just read the posts that you and fleur posted above directed at me, and see what kind of attitude you have. I'm not going to be involved in all these fan wars. I'm not answerable for what others post. From now on, I'll skip all these fan war posts, and concentrate on the match reports or previews. I find those topics more interesting.

luckystar , 11/13/11 1:02 PM

Luckystar You call out for some peace and quite here on this site. Yet when zare promptly starts to attack Fed and the twins and calls us bad names then you do not even blink with youre eyes! This is just the two faced dela wjat has gotten us in this situation. False and idol promisses I call them. That is why my post after your hail in common sense was threated with the carefullness I showed. But I am still willing to give it a go but please take also a good look in the mirror when you state thos big words on this site?

Lets have the last few years we can enjoy Fed and Rafa a nice period just like theyu interact with eachother. It starts here. I wonder if you can do the same. You say you can but do you?

Sienna , 11/13/11 2:22 PM

sienna, FYI, I did not read the whole post of zare, but only that comment addressed to me. Do you think I'm so free to read through every single post here, when I'm not interested in the subject at all?? And why must I say anything to zare concerning Fed and his TWINS??? It's none of my business here, you think I'm the moderator here? Or are you using me to attack zare on your behalf? I said it once again, don't drag me into all these fan wars. I wash my hands! Now no more of your fan war post to me please, let me wait patiently for the final
match to start.

luckystar , 11/13/11 2:40 PM

Sienna... what are you talking about.... attacking twins???
Tennis TV commentator:
"Yesterday Roger had a long press conference... answering about tennis and private life. In one moment reporter asked him "Why is 23.July important to you?"... Roger made a pause, had a laps of concentration and then remembered it's birth date of his twins?"
So where do you see attack on twins???
It's just a fact from Tennis TV!... but you are not to good with facts :)
Fleur... pls... autophill function on iPad is sometimes booooring... but you are correcting someone here in English... C'MON...
Somebody is asking you about birthday of your children... and you have to think about it??? lol!!

zare , 11/13/11 2:52 PM

BTW... photographer never ask question... he makes photos:)... reporters are asking questions :))))

zare , 11/13/11 2:55 PM

You knows what I means then zare. You knows.

Luckystar shut up and stop starting on Sienna.

Cheryl, you going to do something about this or not? yeah, so ban the messengers, because that's what you wants to do. Carry one.

Fleur , 11/13/11 5:29 PM

zare, 11/13/11 2:52 PM

zare,

you asks too questions.

1) Look at the first...it was not a direkt one.
2) of course if question said: when is the birthdate of your girls, he would answer. But 23 could be anything and you knows thats the truth amd who cares anyway?

He's asked a 1000 quesitons in events like this by -reporters- :), and he answers all of 'em, honesty and kindly as he can. He not perfect in these xisuations after a match, he tired and hungry!

Fleur , 11/13/11 5:34 PM

Fleur, what's up? I was just responding to sienna, didn't you see her post to me? Are you the moderator here? Perhaps Cheryl really should step in here!

luckystar , 11/13/11 5:45 PM

lucky: It's enough to try the patience of a saint.

ed251137 , 11/13/11 6:33 PM

Luckystar you understand that you are a liar by making a comment to me like you did. Please do not attack Fleur for sticking up for me.
know you have problems when i call you a lia, but listen you made several lies in your comment towards me. AndI am ok with it. It doesnot matter...

Sienna , 11/13/11 10:17 PM

May I know what lies, sienna? Care to elaborate?

luckystar , 11/14/11 1:17 AM

sienna, fleur 'attack' me by asking me to shut up. So both of you can 'attack' others but not allow others to 'defend'? As I said, count me out of these fan wars, I don't care what happen between you and zare, I'm not interested, full stop.
