  • 1.6 million on the line for Djokovic in Paris start

    11/9/11 2:14 PM | Johan Lindahl
1.6 million on the line for Djokovic in Paris start No. 1 Novak Djokovic put his injured right shoulder through practice paces shortly after landing in Paris and was optimistic of carrying on with his week at the Paris Masters.

The top seed, who hurt the shoulder during his comeback to tennis last week after six weeks out with back problems, immediately announced his intentions upon arrival:

"Bonsoir Paris! Just landed to Orly and heading to Bercy to hit some balls," Djokovic said on his website. "I still don't know how my shoulder will react. Will find out tonight and tomorrow morning :-)Very happy to be back to the most romantic city."

His session at Paris Bercy was taken as a success by onlookers who said the Serb exhibited no problems and looked fit enough for his opening test against Croatian Ivan Dodig.

Djokovic could lose his $1.6 million bonus pool year-end payout if he fails to start in Paris under ATP rules. He has already been docked $400,000 for missing the Shanghai Masters and one more absence would wipe out the entire amount.

That seems perhaps unfair to Roger Federer, who has been out-earned by Djokovic $10 million to $3.8 million so far in 2011.

"It's unfortunate that he could miss out on the bonus pool. Would he deserve it? Maybe, yes, because he's fulfilled a lot of commitments this year and it's been wonderful for the tour.

"But unfortunately, we do have these rules in place, and they need to be followed for any player, also for world number one. He's clearly been great for the game, especially this year with all his records. I hope it's all gonna work out for all parties."

Does he really set his health at risk for US dollars? Maybe he starts serving underhands in order to stay safe.

He looks ok as far as I'm concerned. A lot of people would do a lot worse things for US dollars. As a tennis professional, its one of those foolish shortsighted things you can do, but I'm sure Nole isn't immune to dollar lust.

In any case, it would all be a moot point if the shoulder inflammation has been taken care of because he would play without problems.

Am watching the Djoker playing Dodig and Rafa is right..........it's still the same old Djoker but doing the important things better. What I am finding really impressive about his game is his concentration levels as he plays a point, truly outstanding and you really get a sense of why tennis players prize the ability to concentrate amongst the best in the sport. This is what is making the Djoker's game appear perfect, it's the level of concentration he applies to the IMPORTANT points, minimising the chances for error. I can see how it is easy for a player on the other side to become mesmerised and then frustrated.................

Seems pretty simple, concentrate, pay attention to each point and chances are you will hit the ball clean......

It's the head whot done it for the Djoker.......................

Do note that Nole always tries to step inside the court whenever he has the chances, that way he always controls the points, rushes his opponents and forces them to stay well behind the baseline and they have to defend all the time, just like what Dodig is doing now.
