Juan Monaco beats David Ferrer in three sets to set up a surprising final in Valencia. Monaco will go up against Marcel Granollers for the 500-point title.
It will be a surprising final at the Valencia Open 500 on Sunday, but it won't be an all-Spanish one.
Juan Monaco upset David Ferrer 7-5, 1-6, 6-3 in Saturday night's semifinal to set up a battle for the title against Spaniard Marcel Granollers. Monaco won four fewer points than his opponent but managed to advance after two hours and 15 minutes.
On a slow indoor hard court, breaks were the norm in set one. Ferrer jumped out to a 4-2 advantage and could have led by even more, but he missed multiple early break chances. Monaco broke back for 3-4 and the Argentine's third break of the day came decisively at 5-5. He served out the first set one game later to quiet the Spanish crowd.
Ferrer battled back emphatically, dominating the second. The world No. 5 dropped a mere two points in four service games, so two breaks of his own were easily enough. Ferrer wrapped it up on serve at 5-1 to force a deciding third.
The defending champion's undoing occurred early, with a questionable call on what looked like a game-clinching ace by Ferrer. Clearly rattled, Valencia's top seed unraveled and allowed his opponent to seize a quick break. The ultimate different in the third was service percentage: a dismal 30 for Ferrer and 81 for Monaco. A final clutch hold at 5-3 for the world No. 41 finished off the proceedings.
Monaco served at 70 percent for the match while striking one ace and one double-fault. Ferrer doomed his chances with 44 percent serving and six doubles.
