Marcel Granollers has made a second straight shocking trip to the Valencia final. He takes out Juan Martin Del Potro in straight sets on Saturday and will face Juan Monaco for the title.
It may be hard to believe, but Marcel Granollers is now a back-to-back finalist at the Valencia Open 500.
Granollers, the 2010 runner-up who is 15-3 lifetime at this event, defeated Juan Martin Del Potro 6-4, 7-6(4) during semifinal action on Saturday afternoon. The Spaniard has scored four consecutive upsets, having previously ousted Alexandr Dolgopolov, Marin Cilic, and Gael Monfils.
A competitive first set came down to nothing more than break-point conversions. Granollers saved both of the break points he faced and converted one of his four chances for an early lead. The world No. 34 served out the opening frame of play at 5-4.
Del Potro fought back and earned an early advantage in the second, but squandered leads became the story. The 14th-ranked Argentine failed to finish off the set on serve at 5-3 only to find himself ahead 4-1 in the ensuing tiebreaker. It was no problem for Granollers, who won six straight points to clinch the huge victory.
Granollers could have been set for an all-Spanish final, but he will instead go up against Juan Monaco on Sunday. Monaco upset David Ferrer in three sets.
