Wildcard Kei Nishikori recorded the biggest win of his career, having rallied to oust world No. 1 Novak Djokovic on Saturday. The 21-year-old will face defending champion Roger Federer for the Basel title.
World No. 32 Kei Nishikori advanced to his second final of the season after rallying to upend top seed Novak Djokovic in the semifinal. Nishikori surrendered the opening set, then fought back to seal the victory in three sets, 2-6, 7-6(4), 6-0.
After splitting the first two sets, forehand errors from Djokovic helped Nishikori to a 4-0 advantage in set three. The world No. 1, visibly struggling with a shoulder problem, fell behind match point in game six. Nishikori passed into the final as Djokovic missed a backhand long.
"The second set, (Nishikori) was playing great and was fighting. I have to give credit to my opponent, he was better," said Djokovic. "I didn't make the most of my opportunities.
"I changed the technique of my serve a little bit. I was forcing it too much because of the injury I have," explained the Serb. "I've carried it since the US Open and I'm still afraid something is going to happen. My rhythm with the serve is not good right now."
Nishikori completed the winning effort with five of seven break points converted.
He will take on defending champion Roger Federer in the final. The Swiss defeated compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka in the semifinals, 7-6(5), 6-2.
