  • Murray withdraws from Basel before his opening match

    11/2/11 7:13 PM | Cheryl Murray
Murray withdraws from Basel before his opening match Scotland’s Andy Murray was forced to withdraw from the Basel tournament after waking with sciatica in his leg.

Newly-crowned world No. 4 Andy Murray raised eyebrows last week when he took a last-minute wildcard into the Basel event, which has been frequented by Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer over the past few years.

The wildcard was pulled from Marco Chiudinelli, of the Swiss Davis Cup team, in lieu of Murray, but with the Scot’s withdrawal on Wednesday, Chiudinelli got it back again.

Murray held a press conference in Basel on Wednesday, stating that the injury was sciatica in his leg and that doctors indicated it had probably happened while Murray was asleep.

The world No. 3 was scheduled to play both singles and doubles this week.

Why doesnt his fans try to find out what the F he did the night before?

Sienna , 11/2/11 9:52 PM

Well, Sienna...the short answer is "nothing". He says he got hurt in his sleep.

cherylmurray , 11/2/11 10:26 PM

This surely gives food for thought.

-Is the hotel he stays in not up to standards? Scots are known to be even more on the penny then the dutch!
-Is mom not around to kill the lights? He and his brother are having slumber partys with pillowfights.
-or is he with his special ladyfriend this week? And they did some intensive WII tennis in the bedroom.

All three are very conceivable explanations. I'll take the second option. That must be it. Joking around with his brother.

Does he forfeit his appearance fee?

numero , 11/3/11 12:13 AM

^^^ I don't know the specifics, but I'd guess since he didn't appear, he wouldn't get the appearance fee.

cherylmurray , 11/3/11 1:57 AM

Numero, he didn't take the court so as a general rule that means no fee. And given theat he is an unpstanding guy, I expect Murray, unlike some other top players, wouldn't have resorted to, "I'm injured but I still want some money. If you don't pay me something, I'll go on court and retire injured after one game, then you'll have to pay me my full fee."

sukhumvit , 11/3/11 3:56 AM

Pity. The guy was playing well.

samprallica , 11/3/11 4:39 AM

The pity will be if he loses the momentum. Or if the sciatica has been caused by an underlying injury.

ed251137 , 11/3/11 6:08 AM

ed,

Have you ever had sciatica? Painful, to say the least! I had it once and it was something I would never want to experience again. First I read that he had a hamstring strain. Sciatica is a whole other thing. There can be underlying problems that would cause it, but I am not going to start speculating.

Nativenewyorker , 11/3/11 6:35 AM

Sciatica was the most recent diagnosis I have read. I agree it can be crippling. The severity and duration all depends on the cause of course.

ed251137 , 11/3/11 6:49 AM

Ooh dear, you guys are being really pessimistic :( For me, the only thing worse than watching Andy play, is not watching him play :(

deuce , 11/3/11 6:49 AM

deuce: All the signs are it was a precautionary retirement. Here is the interview he gave after the retirement announcement.

I can't pull up the link, but if it's just precautionary that's good news.

deuce,

I am sorry if I caused you worry. I should not have gotten into sciatica at all. I said that I did not want to start speculating. Perhaps sciatica was used incorrectly. It's a good thing for Andy to listen to his body and pay attention to warning signs. He has played a lot of tennis, but I am sure he is looking towards Paris and especially London.

Nativenewyorker , 11/3/11 8:27 AM

NNY: It was Cheryl who mentioned sciatica above.

To open the link copy and paste, then close up the gap i.e. between 49f 2-bb933

For some reason gaps often appear when links are posted here. If the string is too long then the trick is to copy and paste to a document on your computer then correct it before putting it into your search engine.

Now you know :-)

ed251137 , 11/3/11 11:56 AM

There's no thread for this so I'll write it here.

Nadal has pulled out of Paris.

P.S.: Seems he is pulling out all the stops to win the WTF this year.

bleck , 11/3/11 12:25 PM

"Hi all. I won't be playing this upcoming week the tournament in Paris Bercy. It's been a difficult decision to take but I understand that it is what I need to do right now to prepare well for the end of this season and also for 2012. I hope I can be back in 2012 to that great event in the most beautiful city in the world, and hopefully try to win it one day." - Rafael Nadal

yes bleck, that and the 2012 season. Nole and Andy, you have been forewarned!

phoenix , 11/3/11 12:57 PM

Well that's a bombshell !!!!!!!

You have to feel sorry for the tournament directors with so many star attractions pulling out left right and centre since the USO and even more so for the fans who've paid their money to see them.

ed251137 , 11/3/11 1:21 PM

Well, only one thing for Andy and Rafa fans to do now...sit ON the sofa and scoff vast quantities of chocolate while discussing very, very loudly and irritatingly, how "boring" tennis is at the mo.....;) pass the Green and Black's ed....

deuce , 11/3/11 1:23 PM

"yes bleck, that and the 2012 season. Nole and Andy, you have been forewarned!"

What about Federer?! lol

bleck , 11/3/11 1:29 PM

"discussing very, very loudly and irritatingly, how "boring" tennis is at the mo.....;).."

I think you'll find it's only certain Fed & Nadal fans that go on & ON like that Deuce.
No names of-course.....

Sosueme , 11/3/11 3:23 PM

If it's boring put some money on it. It'll get very interesting for sure. :)

P.S.: This is in no way an incentive to gamble. lol

bleck , 11/3/11 4:07 PM

I'm on a diet so will have to forego the B&G - but I'll pop into the garden for a ciggy from time to time if you get too boring about how boring (unless you are a fan of Djoko or Fed lol) the tennis is at right now.

BTW: Granoller is putting up a good fight against Cilic.
