  • Ferrer, Monfils cruise into Valencia quarterfinals

    11/2/11 11:48 PM | Ricky Dimon
Ferrer, Monfils cruise into Valencia quarterfinals David Ferrer handles Vasek Pospisil in straight sets on Wednesday in Valencia. Ferrer is joined in the last eight by Gael Monfils, a routine winner over Pablo Andujar.

    (1) David Ferrer d. (Q) Vasek Pospisil 6-3, 6-3

Ferrer converted four of six break points and won exactly half of his return points to cruise past Pospisil in one hour and 31 minutes during second-round action at the Valencia Open 500 on Wednesday. With his opponent unaccustomed to playing in significant ATP tournaments, Ferrer raced to a 4-0 advantage in the first set. Pospisil finally held and even earned a break of his own to get within striking distance, but Ferrer seized a third break at 5-3 to wrap up the opening set in style.

The 21-year-old Canadian raised his level early in the second, but he missed four break chances while saving one on his own serve. Leading 40-15 at 3-4, Pospisil cracked and dropped five consecutive points to throw away with the game. Ferrer promptly served out the match at 5-3 with little trouble. The top-seeded Spaniard struck two aces and served at 70 percent en route to a quarterfinal clash against Nikolay Davydenko.

    (3) Gael Monfils d. Pablo Andujar 6-2, 7-6(5)

Monfils fired 10 aces against only one double-fault and stormed to a big lead before holding off Andujar in one hour and 40 minutes. The in-form Frenchman jumped ahead 4-0 with two breaks and served it out from there while saving one break point. Andujar managed to stay on serve in the second until getting broken at 5-5.

Having held serve the entire way, Monfils suddenly cracked for the first time with the match on his racket and could not finish it off. After battling back to force a tiebreaker, Andujar also fought back from a mini-break down at 5-4 in the decider. The underdog Spaniard, however, could not take care of his service point at 5-6 as Monfils clinched victory. Next up for the world No. 10 is either Marin Cilic or Marcel Granollers.
