Fittingly, the best match of the week came in Sunday’s final, with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga just edging out Juan Martin Del Potro.
For a set and a little bit, Juan Martin Del Potro had a stranglehold on this match. The Argentine, who is preparing for the Davis Cup final against Spain, was soundly out-aced by Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the opening set. The Frenchman kicked in an impressive 11 aces for the frame, but Del Potro still managed to find a way to squeak out the lead in the breaker.
The Argentine carried momentum in the second set. Del Potro secured the early break and had a game point that would have put him up 3-1. Instead, Tsonga worked his way into the game and earned the break back. That game turned the tide of the match.
Tsonga served beautifully, with an impressive 25 aces for the match. The Frenchman was decidedly the better conditioned and proved to be the superior indoor player.
