Pospisil saves MP to beat Isner, Mahut also wins Vasek Pospisil upsets John Isner in three sets on Monday in Valencia. Pospisil is joined in the second round by Nicolas Mahut, a straight-set winner over Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.

    (Q) Vasek Pospisil d. John Isner 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(9)

Pospisil saved one match point in the third-set tiebreaker before outlasting Isner in two hours and 13 minutes during first-round action on Monday at the Valencia Open 500. Playing his first match since the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open, Isner came out slow. The 6'9'' American double-faulted on break point midway through the opening set and could not convert his lone break chance to get it back. Pospisil held his nerve and finished off the opening frame of play with a hold at 5-3.

Isner began to turn the tide with a break at 3-2 in the second. The world No. 23 served it out from there, punctuating the set with a second-serve ace at 5-3, 40-15. A thriller of a third set saw Isner save seven match points, including the first two break points of the set at 5-6. Pospisil had five more chances in the ensuing 'breaker; three straight after leading 6-3 with one on his own serve at 6-5. Isner held one match point on Pospisil's serve at 7-8, but the Canadian thwarted it before eventually prevailing 11-9. Pospisil, who struck six aces to Isner's 19, awaits either David Ferrer or Fernando Verdasco.

    (Q) Nicolas Mahut d. Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 7-6(5), 6-2

Mahut used the indoor hard courts to his advantage and held all 10 of his service games to advance in one hour and 38 minutes. Garcia-Lopez managed to stay competitive for a while and both players saved one break point en route to an opening-set tiebreaker. The Spaniard jumped out to a 3-1 advantage, but Mahut won five straight points for 6-3 before capitalizing on his first set point on his own serve at 6-5.

Garcia-Lopez went away quietly in the second, donating serve in the first game of the set. Mahut had no trouble consolidating the lead and he even broke again for 5-2. The veteran Frenchman closed out the proceedings with ease and capitalized on his second match point with a big second serve. Next up for Mahut is Nikolay Davydenko, a three-set winner over Gilles Simon.
