Pablo Andujar kicks off main-draw action in Valencia with a straight-set victory over Juan Ignacio Chela on Sunday. Andujar will go up against either Gael Monfils or Albert Montanes in round two.
A busy week featuring the last two 500-point events of the season got underway on Sunday at the Valencia Open, where Pablo Andujar defeated Juan Igancio Chela 6-0, 7-6(7). Andujar, in the midst of his best year on tour, converted four of five break points and held off a Chela rally to prevail in one hour and 24 minutes.
Chela, never at his best on indoor hard courts, came out slow and won a mere eight total points in the first set. The veteran Argentine saved none of thee break points before Andujar served out the opening frame of play at 5-0.
Andujar seemed to be running away with it when he broke at 3-3 in the second. Chela, however, stormed back out of nowhere and earned his first break of the day at 4-5 to stay alive. Nonetheless, Andujar recovered later in the set and pulled through a close tiebreaker nine points to seven.
Next up for the unseeded Spaniard is either Gael Monfils or Albert Montanes. Monfils, the No. 3 seed, took last week off after winning the Stockholm title.
