World No. 1 Novak Djokovic returns to hard-court action for the first week of November following an extended layoff with injury concerns. The Serbian star is seeded first at the Swiss Indoors Basel.
World No. 1 Novak Djokovic will makes his long-awaited return to competition after struggling with a back injury for the last six weeks. The 24-year-old has not played since his mid-September retirement to Juan Martin Del Potro in Davis Cup.
Djokovic is 64-3 entering into the tournament, where he finished runner-up to Roger Federer in 2010. He is a former champion in Basel, having taken home top prize in 2009 (def. Federer).
The Serbian headlines the top half of the draw which includes (4) Tomas Berdych, (5) Mardy Fish and (8) Viktor Troicki. Additional entrants in the section include Mikhail Youzhny, Marcos Baghdatis, Kei Nishikori, Andreas Seppi, Jurgen Melzer and James Blake.
Djokovic is scheduled to begin his run against veteran Xavier Malisse in the opening round. The closest seed to Djokovic is compatriot Troicki, who looms as a possible quarterfinal opponent. Successful progression through the draw may set a semifinal clash with either Berdych or Fish.
A place in the final will likely guarantee a meeting with an in-form Andy Murray, who heads into Basel on a three-tournament winning streak, or defending champion Federer.
