Marin Cilic captured his sixth ATP World Tour championship title, having held on to oust an in-form Janko Tipsarevic in three sets. The Croatian improved his series advantage to 6-1 against the Serbian.
Fourth seed Marin Cilic won his first title of the season, following his three-set championship success in St. Petersburg. The 23-year-old, making his fourth appearance in a final for 2011, came through the match in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. After splitting the first two sets, Cilic broke serve twice in the decider.
"It was a very good match at a high level. I managed to push myself into a higher gear in the last set," the champion said.
"I was close in other finals (this year) and I think I learned a little bit from them. Today, that pushed me and in the third set, I played my best tennis of the season."
"Marin deserved to win. He was the better player today," said Tipsarevic. "In order to beat Marin, you need to play a certain style of game and for me it was really tough. I gave everything I had in the second set and beginning of the third set. I didn't manage to make a break and after that I went completely down."
Cilic completed the two-hour, 18-minute title-winning effort with a trio of aces and three of eight break points converted.
