A relieved Juan Martin Del Potro is into the Vienna finals after a stern test by South Africa’s Kevin Anderson.
As expected, this was a hard-hitting semifinal with a truck-load of aces for both players. The match came down to one shaky service game from the South African in the third set.
Anderson served up 17 aces for the match and actually seemed more in control of points early on, but Del Potro’s forehand finally penetrated enough of Anderson’s defenses to get the single break of serve in the opening frame.
The second set was a bit sloppier from both players. Del Potro was broken twice, perhaps a result of his first serve percentage dipping below 60%.
The Argentine was able to gain ground again in the third set and another break of the Anderson gave Del Potro the match win.
