The semifinals of the Erste Bank Open are set, with big hitters Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Juan Martin Del Potro leading the charge with wins on Friday.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga def. Xavier Malisse 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-4
As expected, this match was a cracker, with Belgian Xavier Malisse snagging the first set before being edged by tournament top seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. It was by far the most intriguing match of the day. Malisse didn’t hit as many aces as Tsonga in the first set (3 to the Frenchman’s 8), but he was able to keep Tsonga at bay. The only break of serve in the frame went to the Belgian and with it, the lead.
The second set progressed without a single service break. Tsonga was forced to win a tight tiebreaker to stay in the match. Malisse finally surrendered a service break in the third set, which cost him the match.
Juan Martin Del Potro def. Tommy Haas 6-2, 6-4
Argentine No. 2 seed Juan Martin Del Potro had no difficulty getting past German veteran Tommy Haas on Friday. Del Potro was particularly dominant in the first set. Haas had no answer to Del Potro’s hard baseline game and his problems were compounded by his poor second serve. Haas won just 1 point out of 9 second serves for the set.
The German made an attempt to keep up with Del Potro in the second set, but he didn’t have a whiff at a break point chance. The straight set victory for the Argentine was never really in doubt.
