  • Simon, Tipsarevic, top field in St. Petersburg

    10/24/11 2:40 AM | Kelli DeMario
Simon, Tipsarevic, top field in St. Petersburg Gilles Simon and Janko Tipsarevic returns to hard-court action, as the ATP World Tour moves to St. Petersburg for the final week of October. The two are seeded first and second at the St. Petersburg Open.

World No. 12 Gilles Simon makes his return to competition following a round of 16 loss to Matthew Ebden in Shanghai. The Frenchman has built a 39-24 record for 2011, aided by title-winning runs in Sydney and Hamburg.

He will be making his debut at the tournament on Monday.

Simon leads a half of the draw that includes (4) Marin Cilic, (5) Mikhail Youzhny, and (6) Marcel Granollers. Other players in the section include Ernests Gulbis, Julien Benneteau, Sergiy Stakhovsky, Andreas Seppi and Igor Andreev.

The 26-year-old is scheduled to begin his run against compatriot Adrian Mannarino in the opening round. The closest seed to Simon is Youzhny, who looms as a possible quarterfinal opponent. Successful movement through the draw may set a semifinal clash with Cilic or Granollers.

Janko Tipsarevic looks to continue his good form after beating fellow Serbian Viktor Troicki for the Kremlin Cup title on Sunday.. The 27-year-old headlines the bottom half of the draw, alongside (3) Alexandr Dolgopolov, (7) Alex Bogomolov Jr., and (8) Dmitry Tursunov.

Tipsarevic will open his St. Petersburg bid against veteran Olivier Rochus in the first round.
