Jarkko Nieminen is through to his third Stockholm title match after surviving James Blake in three sets on Saturday. Nieminen awaits either Gael Monfils or Milos Raonic.
Jarkko Nieminen booked a spot in his third career If Stockholm Open final--10 years after his first appearance--by defeating James Blake 7-6(5), 5-7, 6-2 on Saturday afternoon. Nieminen, a runner-up in 2001 and 2006, converted five of 14 break points and benefited from seven Blake double-faults to advance.
After exchanging one break of serve each during the first set, Nieminen took control by pulling through the ensuing tiebreaker seven points to five. The 30-year-old Finn seemed to be on course to run away with the match when he broke for a quick lead in the second.
Blake, though, was not about to go down without a fight. The 69th-ranked American broke right back then survived multiple break points at 5-5. He seized a 0-40 lead on Nieminen's serve at 5-6 and converted his third chance to force a final set.
Nieminen also gave back an immediate break to begin the third, but he soon stormed ahead by pummeling Blake's second serves. The world No. 73 won five of the last six games and held at 5-2 to clinch victory.
Next up for Nieminen--who is 1-9 lifetime in ATP finals--is either No. 1 seed Gael Monfils or sixth-seeded Milos Raonic.
