The US Open is floating a controversial plan to play future men's finals on a third Monday, depending on financial negotiations with its hard-nosed television partners.
Officials at the weakest link in the Grand Slam chain have also hinted that the budget hit the tournament might take by losing one session of play to accommodate the possible new schedule could rule out any chance of a moveable roof that the facility built on a former trash landfill desperately needs.
"We’re just getting into this process, everything is on the table," tournament director Jim Curley told the AP. "It’s fair to say that this type of change would have a negative financial impact on the USTA.
"That’s another reason why we’re being very thoughtful in this process. We’re talking about millions of dollars."
Continuing cries from the tennis world to join the new century and install at least one roof over a showcourt have fallen on deaf ears, with the rich federation pleading poverty, among other reasons for refusing to decide on a roof.
The event has descended into chaos for the last four years with delayed men's finals. The Open is the only one of the four majors with back-to-back semifinals and finals for men, a dictate of all-powerful American television interests.
Curley also threw down a warning to the International Tennis Federation about any moves to try and perhaps modify the ill-starred event: "The USTA, not the ITF, runs the U.S. Open."
Player anger mounted at the just concluded event over trademark poor scheduling and discontent over the small share of overall gross represented by prize money.
Roger Federer issued a statement through his management: "It’s good news that they’re reviewing the U.S. Open schedule. It’s the right move for our sport. I'm pleased that the USTA is listening to the players, and I am very encouraged with these developments."

This years USO was a farce & a disgrace.
Screw super Saturday make them all play on the same days in the second week.
And covers please people if you're too cheap for a roof, because it rains quite a lot nowadays up the East Coast. Like sometimes hurricanes & floods.
Good grief!
Sosueme , 10/25/11 1:16 AM
It would definitely make life easier for the players, who are the ones that suffer the most on the rained out days.
This year's schedule was horrific for some players. I think Roddick could have done better in his QF match had he not been faced with going to the stadium every day and then waiting for hours only to have to return the next day, and the next, and next, etc. the poor guy had nothing left after having to deal with ferrer and the crazy schedule.
It's a disgrace that the USTA is thinking only about not making enough profit. The Board of directors should take a pay cut and they should get rid of some of those high-paying executives, and sundry personnel who are paid salaries in the millions. It's even more disgraceful that despite all the high salaries and so many coaches who are most ineffective, we can't seem to raise enough young talent to whom the torch can be passed. What a sad state of affairs for American tennis.

All of the above combined with a dreadfully ineffective president of the USTA. I don't think anything short of an American version of Roger Federer will ever allow even the biggest tennis tournaments to compete with Monday night Football.

I haveheard that a Roof in US Open is a real challenge and might not be as easy as we speak off. Maybe there are architectical problems that cannot really be solved at the moment.
But I wouldliketo hear more from USTA about this. Ofcourse when you guys are talking about floods and hurricanes then a roof will not be sufficient to let them play during those kind of weather occurances.
Btw I loved the fact that Fed embraces the spirit of the USTA or US Open to come with a plan or something like that. That is the true spirit of comming together and try to come out of this ordeal witha sound plan for all of them. He is a gifted person on all leve;s. Very smart andwise for his young age.
Maybe Johan could do a item about how Fed got 132 votes in a election in Suisse? (Schwyz where he lives)
The funny part was that he was not running for the election of course they just voted for him.... Wow I wish I could give my vote to him next election... May be I will.

They need to find a way to get a roof on at least one court. If not Arthur Ashe, then Louis Armstrong. I was hearing talk about tearing down Louis Armstrong and rebuilding it with a roof. The way Arthur Ashe stadium is configurated, it does not seem feasible to put a roof on it.
It all seems unnecessarily complicated. There is no way to simply rely on having good weather. Three years in a row now the men's final has had to be postponed. The other pressing problem is this madness with Super Saturday. There is no reason for the players to suffer because of the weather and this insane Super Saturday, playing the semifinals and the final on consecutive days.
Right now it's all talk and no concrete solutions. I want my country's grand slam event to be something more than a comedy of errors next year.

geez, fitting a slam event into 2 weeks is not rocket science. the root problem is not the weather, it's the ineptitude of the organisers. The last 4 years have demonstrated that wet weather is something which should be expected and planned for. There is no excuse for having top seeds play only 2 matches in the whole first week and expect potential finalists to play up to 5 matches in week 2 - even before the now-regular monsoons have started. In the medium term get at least one roof up. In the short term put people with common sens in charge of scheduling.

Agree with Alex.
It's four years in a row now, that the final has to be postponed to Monday. Don't they learn something out of all these? I wonder if the final doesn't involve any of the top four, would there still be a crowd on the Monday final.
luckystar , 10/26/11 4:47 AM
I agree with the fact that it is strange a player plays first match on wednesday.
However they are really wanting the super saturday to holdup.
But super saturday is great for tennis. So to play final on monday would keep the supersaturday intact and with a day rest for players.
Just like it is great for tennis how USTA as merged all the tournements into the US Open series. That is a great way to move tennis forward,
I am not seeing any of those coherent and bilatoral teamwork in the claytournements.
So we can all huf and puf at USTA but they certainly have some great points about how to sell the game of tennis. Also in the benefid of the players... moneywise.
Sienna , 10/26/11 9:23 AM
Hi Sienna, money makes the world go round for sure. Luckstar, if none of the top four were in the final on a Monday the stadium would be empty and everyone at work. They need to put a roof on it asap, if Wimby can do it why not NYC? Supersaturday suits everyone especially tv in terms of viewers and money which sadly is what governs everything!
mojo , 10/26/11 8:32 PM
That is a little short sighted. If the final was scheduled on monday before the Open started won't the tickets for the final be sold already? I think so.If I should have a ticket I'd take a day off. They could move the final to mondayevening? I like super saturday. Better then a friday semi. So if you never ever want anything to change no growth will be possible
Monday final will solve the day rest they want.
Sienna , 10/26/11 9:49 PM
I would like to add that I think a monday final would only be benificial for US Open or the US open series.
.
Sienna , 10/26/11 10:35 PM
True none the less. Someone said a Monday final would clash with football coverage so doubt if the tv executives would be in favour of this right now.
Sosueme, heard one of the commentators say during the USO they don`t use covers as they don`t look good, hmm...the mind boggles.
mojo , 10/27/11 12:01 AM
A Monday final is not necessary if the Super Saturday mandate were removed. The First week should end with R16 matches being played on the Sunday. Then the second week should begin with the QFs being played on Monday, and spread over two days, which would allow for a day's rest between QFs and SFs for each side of the draw. SFs on Friday and final on Sunday for the men. The women would play their SF on Thursday and final on Saturday. The first week would have 4 matches played in 7 days, and the second week 3 matches played. This way if the rain came in the second week there won't be too much interruption of the schedule and there would still be ample time for rest for the players. And, to sweeten the pot, there won't be a conflict with the precious Monday night football fans and TV stations. Football takes precedence due t the millions the networks gain from advertisers.

It would be in the best interest of the sport, the players, AND the advertisers to have at least one roof. This IS New York, USA for heaven's sake! I take my vacations around the tennis schedules. I have to miss if the finals are pushed out too far. Maybe the TV networks and Advertisers could cough up some dollars in return for ad banners in the interior ... or something!!!
