Juan Martin del Potro has begun a delayed autumn indoor season with the express goal of getting ready for Argentina's Davis Cup final in December against arch rival Spain.
The second seed at the Stockholm Open remains convinced that his South American nation can also strike a major blow at Spanish trophy hopes at the December 2-4 tie in Seville, southern Spain.
The world No. 15 made a valuable contribution in September's semifinal knockout of defending champion Serbia as he won both of his singles rubbers. After skipping the October Asian events to rest, Del Potro should be ready to begin a serious Davis Cup buildup.
Spain has never lost to the Argentines, including the 2008 final in Argentina. "We're heading onto clay, and Rafael Nadal is the king there," said Del Potro. "It's going to be very complicated."
"But Davis Cup finals are special," said the player joined in Stockholm by teammate Davis Nalbandian. "We all hope to arrive in best form. Spain is favored, but if we go in with a low profile and a good attitude we can get a good result
"We upset Serbia by striking hard - hopefully we can repeat that."
Argentina has played three finals without winning a Davis Cup title while the Spanish team holds five trophies since 2000.

Argentina has no chance if Del Potro is losing matches to Blake

Rafa always shows up in DC and plays his best. I agree that if Delpo can't beat Blake, then forget about Rafa on clay in Spain.

Beating Noleless Serbia wasn't exactly an upset. Argentina got lucky :). Good for them but, they won't beat Spain.

I'd like to point out that Del Potro did beat Nole to clinch the tie for the Argentines.

Sure, I know, I was there. But injured opponent is like no opponent at all. Specially in tennis and specially between such two high profile players. Basically, Serbia didn't have Novak in its team. Having said that, Argentina won fair and square. It has a chance of beating Span in Spain if Rafa and David don't show up. However... :))

^^ I know what you mean, and I feel the same way to be honest, being a big Nole fan. But I also think it wouldn't have been guaranteed that Serbia would have won if Nole played. Troicki and Tipsarevic could have done much better than they did.
Argentina haven't yet won a DC, have they?
samprallica , 10/20/11 11:11 AM
^^No they have not.
If I were their coach I would put Pico out there first match against Rafa just to keep Nalby fresh. Neither has a chance against Rafa on clay so it's better to sacrifice Pico to save Nalby's legs for the matches he has a chance to win. Then Delpo must beat Ferrer. Then Nalby can play doubles and must win also. Then Delpo plays Rafa but will probably lose. So if Nalby can find a way to beat Ferrer they could win.

maybe they should put Del Potro in dubs
he is looking pretty good with Baghdatis right about now

That will definetely be the end of Rafa. If he loses this fianl he will put his kicks and gloves on to play goalie for his team/
He will defintely become the best goalkeeper of the third/fourth ?? spanish league. Was it?
