Swedish No. 1 Robin Soderling remains unfit to play in the Stockholm Open as he fights a months-long case of glandular fever.
The two-time Roland Garros finalist, whose ranking has dropped to sixth in the world, has not competed since winning the clay-court Swedish Open in Bastad three months ago.
The 27-year-old had been hoping to start a slow comeback at home at the event where he lost finals in 2003 to Mardy Fish and three years ago to David Nalbandian. But after trying to hit in recent days, Soderling and his doctors concluded that it's too early for him to make a return.
'I’m extremely disappointed and sad right now. Playing in Stockholm is very special for me and it’s a title I still miss and dream about."
Soderling said he went to the courts but was unable to mount much enthusiasm. "I made an attempt to train, but my body just could not do it. I felt worse after practice and so had to make a tough decision to not play in Stockholm.
"I have to think long term and plan to play tennis for years to come. I believe the best days are in front of me. I will do everything I can to get through this difficult time and come back stronger and more motivated than ever."
