Jim Courier has given Andy Roddick some advice - don't work yourself into the ground.
And the younger American has vowed to try and follow the counsel from his Davis Cup coach in an effort to put a disastrous 2011 behind him and work smarter in the off-season to prepare for a more fruitful 2012.
Roddick, now ranked 15th after losing his longtime Top 10 place this season due to injuries and lack of play, is taking the words of four-time Grand Slam winner Courier seriously.
"Jim told me 'I ran myself into the ground. I overworked myself and I was done by 27, 28,'" said the 29-year-old Roddick. "He said, 'You're heading down the same path. You need to kind of pull back a little bit. You're not going to forget how to play tennis overnight. As opposed to doing workouts four times a day, maybe cut it back a little bit.'"
Roddick said he's in agreement. "I've done that, but almost to the extreme where I'm just trying to stay healthy and get through the year and not get hurt and training again. The way I feel moving out there right now isn't optimal. It's not going to be what's going to get me a good result in a big event.
"So I will need more time. But everything he talked about is what goes into being a top tennis player. I just need to space it out and maybe do two thirds of what I do in a day over a longer period and get the same result."
