Andy Roddick's 2011 season is far from done, but the American's warm-up for January's Australian Open has already been decided as the former No. 1 heads the field at the eight-man AAMI Classic.
The special event at Melbourne's Kooyong Club (former home of the Grand Slam), which proceeds the Open, has was once a regular part of Roddick's schedule after winning it three times.
The elite tune-up could be the perfect tonic for the 29-yea-old after a year punctuated by fits and starts due to injuries and poor form.
Tournament Director Colin Stubs said he had been knocking on the door recently with the Roddick camp and finally got the answer he was looking for. "I had a gut feeling this year that Andy might be ready to return," Stubs said. "That was vindicated when I picked up the phone to his manager recently and received a positive response."
Joining Roddick will be seventh-ranked Czech Tomas Berdych, winner of the title in Beijing which broke a trophy drought lasting two and a half years.
Also in the mix: the French pair of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and showman Gael Monfils, another victim of repeated injuries in 2011. Austrian Jurgen Melzer has entered along with Australian teenager Bernard Tomic, the first to commit. Two spots remain in the field for the January 11-14 tournament, with Andy Murray said to be interested.
