Tokyo runner-up Rafael Nadal and Beijing champion Tomas Berdych will get back on the court this week in Shanghai. They are in a section of the draw that also includes Janko Tipsarevic, Florian Mayer, and David Nalbandian.
Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer are still on vacation, but there is no rest for the weary heading into the Shanghai Rolex Masters.
Rafael Nadal and Tomas Berdych have not played quite as much tennis as Andy Murray of late, but they are getting right back on the court after long weeks in Tokyo and Beijing, respectively. Nadal reached the Japan Open final before getting pummeled by Murray, while Berdych powered his way to the China Open title with weekend wins over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Marin Cilic.
The Shanghai draw has done no favors for either player, putting them in a tough top quarter. Before a Nadal-Berdych quarterfinal can be guaranteed, however, they both have some work to do.
Nadal could open against Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, who stunned his heavily-favored countryman last fall in Bangkok. David Nalbandian, Ernests Gulbis, or Florian Mayer will challenge Nadal in round three if the top seed gets through his opener. Berdych awaits a likely second-round match against Radek Stepanek before potentially running into recent nemesis Janko Tipsarevic. The Serb ousted Berdych at both the Montreal Masters and the U.S. Open.
Marquee first-round matchups in the first quarter of the bracket include Nalbandian against Gulbis and Tipsarevic against 2009 Shanghai semifinalist Feliciano Lopez.
