Mayer takes advantage of seeded spot in Shanghai A host of withdrawals gave Florian Mayer a seed this week in Shanghai and he capitalized on a favorable first-round draw. Mayer crushed Fabio Fognini to set up a clash with either David Nalbandian or Ernests Gulbis.

Florian Mayer maintained his fine form by kicking off the Shanghai Rolex Masters with a convincing 6-0, 6-2 victory over Fabio Fognini on Sunday afternoon. Mayer, who recently captured his first ATP title in Bucharest, struck four aces without double-faulting and won 18 of 19 first-serve to advance in a mere 48 minutes.

The German sent a message right from the start that Fognini would be out of his league on a hard court. Not unlike the Tokyo final, in which Rafael Nadal won four total points against Andy Murray in the third set, Fognini earned only five in the opener against Mayer. The underdog won two on his own serve and three when he got a look at his opponent's second delivery.

Fognini at least managed to get on the scoreboard in set two, but he still never sniffed a break point. The Italian won three points in four return games, so two breaks to Mayer were more than enough for the No. 15 seed to cruise.

Mayer, who is ranked 22nd in the world, surged into the seeded realm thanks to a flurry of withdrawals--including from Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Juan Martin Del Potro. Next up for him is either David Nalbandian or Ernests Gulbis.

Meanwhile, Stanislas Wawrinka joined Mayer in round two with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over 2010 Shanghai semifinalist Juan Monaco. Wawrinka, seeded 13th, could get a rematch with Donald Young in the next round. Young, who qualified, beat Wawrinka in a fifth-set tiebreaker at the U.S. Open.
