Jo-Wilfried Tonga is playing the China Open with more calm than was evident in his first appearance in the Chinese capital. The world No. 7 is competing as top seed and enjoying his third appearance at the event.
It was totally different when he played as a youngster in 2004 and copped a lucky scheduling break. "I qualified and beat Carlos Moya the first round," he recalled.
But just getting to the match was an adventure in itself. Thinking his Moya match was cancelled by weather, Tsonga said he was surprised to get a call from his coach telling him to rush to the courts.
"I took the car from the hotel, but the road was full of traffic and it took an hour to arrive. I saw my coach and I asked him, 'My match is dead? I'm a walkover?. He said 'No, no, it rained a bit, so they delayed the match for 45 more minutes. So you're playing in 30 seconds.'
"I went on the court and I won 6-3, 6-2, and one hour after I was on the way back against Moya. It was a really good story for me. So now I'm here after I think seven years, and a lot of things happen during these years."
In his second appearance in 2007 Tsonga again reached the second round, losing to German Nicolas Kiefer.
