  • Beijing - Mayer advances, Roddick upset

    10/3/11 8:24 PM | Kelli DeMario
Beijing - Mayer advances, Roddick upset Bucharest champion Florian Mayer continued his run of solid play with a first-round victory over qualifier Albert Ramos. Tournament seed Andy Roddick crashed out to Kevin Anderson late Monday.

Kevin Anderson def. (6) Andy Roddick 6-4, 7-5

World No. 31 Kevin Anderson is through to the second round following his straight-set victory over former champion Andy Roddick. The 25-year-old South African tallied eight aces and four service breaks, en route to a 6-4, 7-5 win in an hour and 42 minutes. Roddick completed the match with seven of 18 second-service points won.

"I didn't serve very well," said Roddick. "I had lots of break points in the first set. I broke twice in the second set. If I break twice and don't win a set, that says my serve isn't holding up."

Anderson is slated to take on either Albert Montanes or Paul Capdeville in the next round.

Florian Mayer def. (Q) Albert Ramos 6-2, 6-4

World No. 22 Florian Mayer made a successful start to the tournament, having ousted qualifier Albert Ramos in straight sets. The German, who recently won his first tour title in Bucharest, held nine consecutive service games through 72 minutes.

He will face either 7th seed John Isner or Ivan Ljubicic in the round of 16.
