Janko Tipsarevic holds off Marcos Baghdatis on Sunday in Kuala Lumpur to win his first career ATP title. Tipsarevic, competing in his fifth final, emerges victorious in straight sets.
The fifth time was the charm for Janko Tipsarevic.
Previously 0-4 lifetime in ATP finals, Tipsarevic finally secured his first career title by defeating Marcos Baghdatis 6-4, 7-5 on Sunday evening at the Malaysian Open. The world No. 17 closed it out on his second chance to serve for the match and clinched the win after two hours and six minutes of play.
With the pressure on, Tipsarevic got off to a slow start but righted the ship and jumped ahead of Baghdatis with two breaks in the first set. That allowed Kuala Lumpur's No. 3 seed to finish off the opener on serve at 5-4.
Tipsarevic appeared to be going full speed ahead to victory when he seized his third break of the day for a 2-1 advantage in the second. He consolidated the lead en route to 5-3, but Baghdatis held and then broke for 5-5 to stay alive.
The meltdown at 5-4 could have been another "here we go again" moment for Tipsarevic given his track record in title matches, but he refused to let it happen. Instead, the Serb bounced right back for another break and this time made no mistake with victory on his racket at 6-5.
Tipsarevic fired nine aces without double-faulting, although he served at just 51 percent. Baghdatis struck nine aces and double-faulted twice. The 60th-ranked Cypriot, a four-time champion on the ATP Tour, was competing in his 11th career final.
