10/1/11 8:33 PM | Cheryl Murray
American Donald Young played the match of his career to get a tight three-set victory over the No. 2 seed Gael Monfils.
Donald Young is into his first ever ATP final. He made his first semifinal earlier in the summer, and his first round of 16 at a Grand Slam at the US Open, but this win over France’s Gael Monfils is surely the most important win to date.
The first set and a half went predictably. Monfils took the opening set without facing a single break point, which he followed up with a break lead in the second set. Out of nowhere, Young decided to fight back. He was down a break twice in the middle frame, and twice he clawed his way out of trouble. The American played a clutch tiebreaker and improbably leveled the match at a set apiece.
Monfils had plenty of chances in the third set as well. The Frenchman once again squandered leads to Young, including a 4-1 advantage. All credit to the American who continued to plug away even when he appeared out of the match.
Young will take on Scotland’s Andy Murray in Sunday’s final.
