Janko Tipsarevic is once again on the doorstep of his first ATP title after taking care of Kei Nishikori in the Kuala Lumpur semifinals on Saturday. Standing in Tipsarevic's way is Marcos Baghdatis.
Janko Tipsarevic continued his 2011 dominance of Kei Nishikori with a 6-4, 6-3 victory in the Malaysian Open semifinals on Saturday. Tipsarevic improved to 5-0 lifetime against Nishikori--all five this season--after one hour and 49 minutes of play.
Nishikori failed to take a set from his nemesis for the fourth time in those five attempts, but he made this one extremely competitive despite what the scoreline suggests. Right from the start, the clash came down to little more than break-point conversions.
One break midway through the set proved to be decisive in the opening frame of play. Tipsarevic got the upper hand and saved the only break point he faced before closing it out on serve at 5-4. Kuala Lumpur's No. 3 seed served at just 51 percent throughout the opening set but won 16 of 18 first-serve points.
Tipsarevic won the second with two breaks, although he just barely made them stand up. Nishikori saved only one of three break points while squandering all five of his opportunities. The world No. 54 played well but consistently came up short at the crucial moments and his third donation of serve at 3-5 ended the proceedings.
Still in search of his first career ATP title, Tipsarevic booked a spot in his fifth final. The 17th-ranked Serb finished with four aces, served at 88 percent in the second set, and won 33 of 40 first-serve points. Nishikori wrapped up his effort with three aces and only one of four break points saved.
