A wide-open field this week in Kuala Lumpur is headlined by top seeds Nicolas Almagro, Viktor Troicki, and Janko Tipsarevic. Other contenders include Nikolay Davydenko, Bernard Tomic, and Marcos Baghdatis.
At some point, the drought for Janko Tipsarevic has to end. Doesn't it?
Despite being a staple of the Top 30 over the past several seasons, Tipsarevic has never won an ATP title. The 27-year-old Serb has reach four finals--all in the last three years, including two in 2011--but has never gotten over the hump.
Tipsarevic has another big opportunity this week at the Malaysian Open in Kuala Lumpur, where he is the No. 3 seed. Ranked 17th in the world as of Sunday afternoon, Tipsarevic has to be considered the tournament favorite if he is physically 100 percent. He boasts an awesome 40-20 record for the season, which includes a recent semifinal in Montreal and a quarterfinal at the U.S. Open.
This title, though, is up for grabs among a balanced field that features Nicolas Almagro and Viktor Troicki as the top two seeds. Almagro is in a tough upper half of the draw that also includes Tipsarevic, Kei Nishikori, Nikolay Davydenko, and Philipp Petzschner. Troicki has a good chance to end his current slump in a weaker bottom half, in which Jurgen Melzer is seeded fourth.
First-round matchups to watch include Davydenko vs. Ryan Harrison, Alex Bogomolov vs. Marcos Baghdatis, and Bernard Tomic vs. Flavio Cipolla.
