Jo-Wilfried Tsonga takes out Alexandr Dolgpolov in straight sets on Saturday in Metz. Tsonga will go up against Ivan Ljubicic for the title.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga booked a spot in the Moselle Open title match on Saturday night, dismissing Alexandr Dolgopolov after one hour and 16 minutes. Tsonga struck six aces without double-faulting as he set up a final showdown against Ivan Ljubicic.
Displaying some nerves in front of his own French crowd and perhaps slow to recover from a tough quarterfinal against countryman Nicolas Mahut, Tsonga fell behind early. The world No. 10 dropped serve in the third game of the match, mainly due to a loss of control with his forehand.
Dolgopolov, however, faltered with the lead in hand. The 22-year-old Ukrainian led 30-0 at 3-2, but he lost four straight points to give back the break. Having regained the momentum, Tsonga went on a roll. He held easily en route to a 5-4 advantage before breaking serve again to finish the set when Dolgopolov netted a backhand at ad-out.
Tsonga also delivered the goods when it mattered most in set two. Both players held serve with little difficulty throughout the first nine games of the second. In fact, Tsonga won all 14 of his first-serve points and lost just three points on serve en route to a 5-4 lead. '
Once again Dolgopolov buckled under the pressure while serving in the 10th game--this time serving to stay in the match. Tsonga capitalized on his first chance to clinch victory at 15-40 when Dolgopolov dumped a forehand in the net.
Metz's top seed and crowd favorite won 87 percent of his first-serve points on the way to his third final of the season. Dolgopolov wrapped up his effort with two aces and no double-faults.
