Austrian ironman Thomas Muster will finally hang up his racquet for good as he plays for the last time at age 45 as a wild card at the home Vienna ATP event where he got his start in the game.
The one-time dominator of the clay courts in the 1990s and winner of Roland Garros 16 years ago has made an unsuccessful try at a return to the Challenger circuit over the past two seasons. His winning total has been a mere two matches, one of them in recent weeks in Todi, Italy.
A year ago, former No. 1 Muster took a Vienna wild card but lost in the first round to countryman and eventual finalist Andreas Haider-Maurer. Since then, Muster has gone 1-14 in Challengers.
Muster will celebrate his birthday next month, 11 years after first leaving the ATP.
"You shouldn't drag it out forever," Muster told local media. "I wanted to relive competitive tennis again - I've really enjoyed it." Musters stands 847th in the rankings.
"Vienna (beginning October 22) will definitely be my last appearance in an ATP event," he said, adding: "I might play a few Challengers next year, but that will be it."
