  • Del Potro confident as Davis Cup final approaches

    9/23/11 8:15 PM | Johan Lindahl
Del Potro confident as Davis Cup final approaches The Davis Cup final is still two months away. But that's plenty of time for Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro to start getting excited about the December 2-4 clay-court grudge battle with Spain.

"We'll be getting onto red clay and (Rafael) Nadal is the king there. It will be very complicated for us," said the 2009 US Open champion, now ranked 13th after a long comeback from 2010 wrist surgery.

Argentina showed its potential with an upset of defending champion Serbia last weekend in the semifinals of the team competition. But Spain has beaten the South Americans in all three of their meetings - the last a Davis Cup final in Mar Del Plata which left a bitter taste in the mouths of the defeated hosts.

Spain, with Nadal leading the pack, is bidding for a fifth trophy since 2000 and has the huge advantage of staging the final at home.

Del Potro, who will play a full autumn indoor schedule, still sees big chances for an upset. "Finals are always different and special; hopefully we'll all arrive in top form and will have four players of a high level to face Spain.

"Spain are the favorites, but if we go in with a low profile and a good attitude this time we'll get a good result. We went to Serbia (for the semifinals) as well to cause an upset and we struck hard. Hopefully we can repeat this."

Rafa and David will just be back from the WTF. That could be a big advantage for Argentina. Hopefully, they'll have enough gas left to take on Nalby and DelPotro. Just wondering if Nalby had to play any five setters in Serbia? It's going to be a good one for sure.

I think Argentina will go all out to finally win in December. I tihink they can make it tough if they play the way they did against Serbia, but Spain has Rafa. He alone can make the difference.

We saw that fatigue after the USO final and jet lag from the flight to Cordoba, did not deter Rafa. He will not want to lose on home soil. This article does say that Delpo has a full Autumn schedule, so he has to be sure to stay healthy and not get tired.

I am expecting a great final and some brilliant tennis.

Argentina can win if they beat Ferrer twice and win doubles. That has to be the strategy. Just put Pico out there against Rafa since Nalby won't beat him anyway. Save Nalby for doubles and Ferrer. Put Delpo out there against Ferrer and give him a try against Rafa since that should be the 4th rubber.

Over five sets, I won't be surprised that Ferrer beats both Nalby and Delpo. Never underestimate Ferrer on clay, and especially during DC!! My bet is Ferrer will beat both of them if they meet!

agree with luckystar. ferrer is going to beat both of them if he is able to play at a good level. Delpo can take down ferrer but no way rafa is going down on his home soil in a best of 5. spain to win the cup

DelPo could beat Ferrer on clay...not sure about Nalbs though. I expect Nadal will win both of his rubbers though.

Spain need to re-visit doubles though. Not sure Lalo and Dasco get the job done on the dirt.

cherylmurray , 9/25/11 2:31 AM

Spain may NEED to revisit the doubles, but IT won't. Lopez/Dasco is the team. Plus it doesn't have any better options and it is not going to overwork Nadal and/or Ferrer.

So someone thinks Pico has a better chance of beating Rafa than Nalby. Hahahaha. I'm not even saying that Nalby has much chance either. Delpo is talking the talk, we'll see if he'll walk the walk. Ferrer is a hard nut to crack, so I wouldn't even assume Delpo will beat him.

Both Lopez and Nando suffer from Flaky Syndrome, when they are good, they are very very good, but when they are bad, they are horrid. If they are both good at the same same time they win if they are bad at the same time, well, they get trounced.

Spain at their best will beat Argentina at their best, so unless Spain are having a bad day, which can happen to anyone even the King of Clay, Argentina has no chance.

nadline,

As usual a simple statement has gone over your head. Clearly you don't get inferences so I'll spell it out for you. They might as well put Pico out there as a sacrificial lamb against Rafa since Nalby will need the extra rest to play doubles and his singles rubber against Ferrer. If you read my initial statement I said the strategy has to be to win doubles and take down Ferrer twice as it's going to be very hard for even Delpo to beat Rafa on mud.

^^^All I can say numero is, you are not very good at sarcasm.
