  • Hewitt to soldier on in 2012 as Sydney event ambassador

    9/21/11 2:23 PM | Johan Lindahl
Hewitt to soldier on in 2012 as Sydney event ambassador Never-say-die Lleyton Hewitt seems to have put a forgettable injury-ridden season behind, with the 30-year-old already set to charge into 2012 by committing to the Sydney International event.

Not only will the four-time winner (2000, 2001, 2004 and 2005) be back in the field after changing his pre-Australian open playing schedule totally last season, he will also be an official ambassador for the tournament which ends on the Saturday prior to the January 16 start of the Open.

The Sydney event will harvest the Hewitt home appeal with the player set to appear in November at a charity pro-am and a kids' clinic.

The 30-year-old Hewitt is due to start at Olympic Park for the 11th time after opting to play at the Kooying special event in Melbourne a year ago in preparation for the Open. That plan seemed to backfire, with the former No. 1 and two-time grand Slam winner exiting in the first round to Argentine David Nalbandian.

"I'm really pleased to confirm my participation in next year's Sydney International," said Hewitt. "It is a really special tournament for me and I have great memories from my four titles there.

"The support I have received at Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre over the years has been fantastic and I can't wait to kick start my 2012 season in front of a packed Ken Rosewall Arena crowd."

Hewitt's appointment came 24 hour after his loss to Stanislas Wawrinka in Davis Cup ended Aussie hopes of a return to the elite World Group in that competition. Hewitt is the first signing for Sydney, which was won last year by Gilles Simon.

Anyone saying that the top guys are "millionaires" and shouldn't be even trying to influence their scheduling, should take a look at Hewitt. Only 30 and injury after injury.
They have a very, very brief time in the sun before their bodies compel them to stop.
