  • Wawrinka outlasts Hewitt to clinch World Group for Swiss

    9/19/11 5:20 PM | Ricky Dimon
Wawrinka outlasts Hewitt to clinch World Group for Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka finishes off Lleyton Hewitt in a decisive Davis Cup singles rubber on Monday in Sydney. Switzerland returns to the World Group for 2012.

It took Stanislas Wawrinka just three minutes to put Switzerland back in the Davis Cup World Group.

Actually, Wawrinka needed more than four hours in total. But after resumption of play on Monday, the Swiss wasted no time finishing off Australia's Lleyton Hewitt for a 6-4, 4-6, 6-7(7), 6-4, 6-3 victory at the Royal Sydney Golf Club.

A back-and-forth thriller saw Hewitt earn a critical break at 5-4 in the first set to seize an early lead. Wawrinka returned the favor by the same scoreline in set two, then Hewitt saved four set points in a dramatic third before taking it 9-7 in a tiebreaker.

With Hewitt hobbling due to minor knee and foot injuries, Wawrinka regained the momentum in set four. The world No. 19 gave back an early break, but after his second break of the set he closed out the proceedings on serve at 5-4. Wawrinka surged to a 5-3 advantage in the fifth before darkness halted play on Sunday.

They came back out one day later with Hewitt serving to stay in the match. The world No. 199 jumped out to a 0-30 lead, but two double-faults followed by two forehand errors ended it in Wawrinka's favor and ended the host nation's hope of reaching the World Group.

"On grass it's never easy to play Hewitt," said Wawrinka. "It was a really tough weekend. It's really important for me to play for the Swiss team. I was really happy to be here. I think against Lleyton I played one of my best matches in Davis Cup."

Stan, we very proud swiss suppoteurs. What a great show at the end.

Fleur , 9/19/11 5:30 PM

The first positive comment on this TT site.
Thanks for setting the example.

Sienna , 9/19/11 9:04 PM

not the first, just the first that was recognized

comments are like news. News is only news when its "bad" news. Good news never gets reported.

RickyDimon , 9/19/11 11:52 PM

RickyDimon, speaking of which why don't you post he news about federer being the second person of the world most respected and trustes behind only nelson mandela.
That's "good" news for tennis. This is why federer has done, is doing and will do for tennis more than any other players. Federer elevates the sport.

bleck , 9/20/11 9:50 AM

That is awesome bleck! Roger is second only to Mandela who is another one of my heroes since he visited my school some years ago.

numero , 9/20/11 7:52 PM

http://sports.yahoo.com/tennis/blog/busted_racquet/post/Roger-Federer- is-the-second-most-respected-man-i?urn=ten-wp3426

I just realised that Roger was wearing this shirt at his interview after the loss to Nole. Since so many people were giving Nole's mom and dad flak for wearing shirts depicting their son last year at the USO, I'm starting to wonder where all those voices are this year.

Not that I see anything wrong with Roger doing it of course. But does second most respected really count for anything? After all, the list does contain names like the Queen, Obama, Jolie et all, who really are as good as criminals.

samprallica , 9/21/11 9:31 AM

Watch it Samp. You cant go around insulting our Queen like that!

ed251137 , 9/21/11 11:12 AM

Haha, sorry - the Queen is a big time criminal from a family of criminals. That's how i see it, has nothing to do with nationality or the British peopole - who have plenty among them that deserve respect.

samprallica , 9/21/11 12:25 PM

Stan + Mrs Wawrinka apparently back together.
(I sound like a gossip mill).

mriiidula , 9/21/11 1:24 PM

xoxo mriidula?
Stan will now discover what he truly was missing and become the number one tennis player, and his subsequent exploits will be stuff of legends, inspiring at least a couple of movies and one tv show.

xrf , 9/21/11 2:03 PM

samprallica, I'm anti monarchy but the queen is just a cypher. If you want criminals look no further than Blair.
mriiidula, lol and u do, but as soon as he left his tennis got worse and worse. How can she ever trust him?
xrf, not holding my breath on that one.

deuce , 9/21/11 2:17 PM

lol xfr, that would be funny. it could happen! ;)
deuce, i know, he's one lucky man. lets hope he doesn't make the same mistake twice.

mriiidula , 9/21/11 3:07 PM

^^ No, I don't share the opinion that the Queen is just a cypher, because I believe that she actually calls the shots alongside the bankers. Blair is a puppet, evil no doubt, but holds less power IMO. The myth that the Queen doesn't hold any power is just a way to keep the masses ignorant and happy that a "monarchy doesn't actually exist", when in reality she's awesomely rich and so many states still keep her as the highest authority in the Commonwealth.

I also think that Stan's issue was a personal matter and the talk that he'd left to improve his tennis is either a false rumour or if Stan confirmed it previously, he was just giving what he thought was the best possible reason that could keep the media happy.

samprallica , 9/21/11 3:14 PM

Hi sienna,

Quite cheap that here persons talk about private life of stan as if they know what happens between married cuples. Bad really that they look perfect in their relat?ships, throw?ng stones at strangers, never argue with partners or loved ones. Perfect they must be.

Roger's tee-shirt was a limited edition for his charity samprall?ca and never was common as hav?ng a tee-shirt with zoom face covering whole of chest. That was just cheap taste by novak?s parents. Everyone said it. Roger is class and worn only at practice tennis courts, not grand slams. Tee-shirt was great thought by char?ty team lead by his parents and an honor for his ach?evenments in tennis. He?s the best a man can get.

All the best to stanley and his w?fe.

Fleur , 9/21/11 7:54 PM

Thanks Fleur.
They try everything to bring Fed down.
Even teammates are being dragged into it. It is incredible.
Again you stepped in and told the real story.

Sienna , 9/21/11 8:36 PM

All stories about Stan... "who had left the wife and kid to play more tennis" were from only one source.... his wife. So there must be something suspicious.
He never said something... and there were lot of efforts from so called journalists...to drag him in that waters...
Some things should stay private...

zare , 9/21/11 9:55 PM

...but ofc...some things are not private.
In that way every idiot can about:"...cheap taste by novak?s parents..."
Incredible !!!

zare , 9/21/11 9:58 PM

F & S are joined at the hip like Siamese Twins. One starts the comment and the other finishes it.

ed251137 , 9/21/11 10:57 PM

yes, ednumbers, course. sim?lar to you and zare, cept he starts, you finish!

zare, 9/21/11 9:55 PM

zare, and that?s why you didn?t hear from stan. He kept pr?vate, the wife broke back. Anger perhaps? who knows. These stor?es should have more respect for tenn?s players private lives, in case they want to share there lives with whole world and tell everyth?ng, like rafa in his book, look?ng for look at me stuff, and cheap ?t was to wear a tee shirt with son?s whole face crowd?ng the pa?nt.

Who wants to see that? Go to a school and play pa?t by numbers to draw in the dots when you are 5, not 55!

S?enna, what would zare and ed say if Fed had done that on a tee shirt? I would be hav?ng a stroke if they sa?d anyth?ng good about it.

Fleur , 9/22/11 5:31 AM

Haha, Fleur are you telling me that Federer couldn't think of some other design for charity? Or that, even if the shirt was the best possible marketing gimmick, that he had to wear it on himself?

Nole's mom and dad wore the shirts, not Nole. To me, that's as good as pappy Federer and his RF cap; which has almost become his trademark appearance. You guys have one rule for Roger and another for the rest of the world.

samprallica , 9/22/11 9:13 AM

"He's the best a man can get". I can hear a huge chorus of laughter ringing in my ears.

Federer is a brilliant tennis player, good ambassador, and nice guy. However, he has some glaring faults when things don't go his way. And I do think he is entitled to his faults, since he is human after all. But let's leave the praise to where it should be and not go around making him a saint.

samprallica , 9/22/11 9:17 AM

samprallica, Why can't Robert Federer (Federer's dad) wear the RF hat?! Can't you see that RF stands for Roger Federer and Robert Federer, lol.

P.S.: It's a question of taste, djokovic's parents are tasteless and have no manners, Federer's parentes are the opposite. It's not djokovic's fault, a person can't choose their parents.

bleck , 9/22/11 10:12 AM

Here we go again.. A guy does charity and some people in the world says,'owhh no, he's just doing it to market himself'.

Ok let's have it sampraliica's way, CELEBRITIES!!!! DON'T GIVE A CENT TO ANY POOR CHILDREN!!!

Charity is charity, it's done on a good cause, why find any reason to oppose it?

torres9 , 9/22/11 10:25 AM

And samprallica, nobody's saying he's a saint. He's respected, get over it. The poll is never 100% accurate but it's from 50k respondents. That's quite a huge sample. Maybe these people like tennis and see Roger play or maybe they read about him giving charities.

You think other players don't market themselves? Look at Rafa stripping for Armani and Nole doing Head commercials with MaSha.

Can you give me 1 selfless reason as to why Rafa did Armani if not for the freaking money?

torres9 , 9/22/11 10:34 AM

Torres9....OFC it is all for the freaking money!
Nole and Head... Rafa and Armani... Fed and Wilson.... everything!
Charity???... ofc it is about money... Fed's mum is EXO of foundation... and money would anyway went to taxes. In Swiss every penny you gave to charity is pure profit. You will pay less taxes for that amount. So it is very profitable to give some money coz it superb publicity... good marketing... and you are really helping some kids.
So everybody is happy...
I can give you more correct data but I would have to look... every canton in Swiss has different tax rates. Fed officially is resident of Canton Zug... he really lives in Basel ( other canton )... but canton Zug is one of tax paradises. If you are rich.... I mean RICH... before you become resident you can negotiate you tax rate. So normally lot of rich ppl are residents...
So I don't see reason to analyze pubs with stars... charities.. expo matches... they are for money. What else? I would do it, you would... everyone :)

@fleur...

no... every time I answer you I have to sterilize my keyboard... not anymore... just continue with your rubbish and mumbo jumbo... whatever...

zare , 9/22/11 11:21 AM

@bleck... "djokovic's parents are tasteless and have no manners,"
Pls...can you elaborate a little this statement? You know them personally?

zare , 9/22/11 11:26 AM

"You think other players don't market themselves? Look at Rafa stripping for Armani and Nole doing Head commercials with MaSha." - torres9 , 9/22/11 10:34 AM

Why can't you people defend your god without dragging other players in the muck!!!

phoenix , 9/22/11 11:32 AM

zare, No I don't know them personally. Surprise, surprise.
no manners:
- "The king is dead" by djokovic's mom on AO 2008. I know federer had made 10 straight slam finals up to that point but a semi isn't that bad a result.
- Talking during point on Monte Carlo 2008, Federer had to tell them to shut up.

tasteless:
- have you seen djokovic's parents t-shirts. I remember two: one of them last year at the US Open. And there was one with an eagle, I think, and djokovic's face - terrible taste. (If you want to see just google it).

P.S.: As I said in the post above, I have nothing against djokovic.

bleck , 9/22/11 11:47 AM

Bleck He said be quiet.
But it was ferm and decisive. And you felt the shame the two hacklers must have felt. Tension could be cut with a knife.

When Roger speaks everyone listens.

Sienna , 9/22/11 11:58 AM

You're right sienna. He did say "Be quiet" which is much more polite than "shut up".
My bad.

bleck , 9/22/11 12:06 PM

bleck, you really, really can't hold Djkovich responsible for his parents.

deuce , 9/22/11 12:16 PM

Oops sorry bleck, I read back and you did say that.
To be honest I really don't know why ANYONE'S parents have been yanked into discussions.

deuce , 9/22/11 2:09 PM

@fleur...

no... every time I answer you I have to sterilize my keyboard... not anymore... just continue with your rubbish and mumbo jumbo... whatever...
zare, 9/22/11 11:21 AM

zare, I try more, yet yours not perfect either!
You don't know Novak personally.

We all know he is a show off. He loves praise, adult fanpraise. He plays up to camera, sings, dances and performs. He is arrogant. His parents can be tasteless as said before. Who have you ever seen walk?ng anyware with big face on cotten shirt?

Really big face, spread across the chest? It?s obscene, and at a slam? RF is a tiny in compar?son, and all money goes to foundat?on causes. Same as the bear. But Novak's parents, was not good taste. Horrible as bleck said. Worse still, rafa strip?ng off. Obseen. Should be role model to kids. Th?s isnnt role modelling. This is commercial. Murray?s mum even worse. Always talk?ng about herself. Novak's parents don?t have manners. Whistling in the crowd when NOvak plays.

I?ve herd it. Always shouting and fisting.
But let's leave the praise to where it should be and not go around making him a saint.
samprallica, 9/22/11 9:17 AM

No one saying he's a saint. But he's a better, more thortful man than you ever be.

Fleur , 9/22/11 5:13 PM

No sweat deuce :)

bleck , 9/22/11 5:23 PM

Blah blah. Federer could have come up with another design for his shirt, it would have sold just as much. Besides, you are missing the point! Fed himself was wearing the shirt and he has tons more class than Novak's parents? How is that anything but double standards?

And as far as I'm concerned, your true class is tested when things don't go your way. Take a bow, Roger Federer.

samprallica , 9/22/11 6:38 PM

Maybe they voted Stan the 3rd most trusted man in the world, as it appears that the poll was done in Switzerland, so his Mrs decided to have him back and put implicit trust in him.

nadline , 9/22/11 8:20 PM

so jealous of dear, dear Roger.

ha hej!

Who would eve? tr?st you? No one within a mile of Ibiza.

Fleur , 9/22/11 8:42 PM

So he isagain at Ibiza?
walking the walk? Talking the talk? Heis just a manchild following his chram. Is that some Serb word chram? Prob not so do not try to encounter./

Sienna , 9/22/11 10:01 PM

According to Tignor in "High Strung", Connors once spat at Mcenroe's box! Puts saying "Be quiet" into perspective :)
NNY book is excellent, can recommend. Very well written, loads on other players, history of game, history of Slams etc
