Rafael Nadal was once again brilliant in Cordoba, giving Spain the last win it needed to advance to the Davis Cup finals against Argentina.
A re-match of the 2008 final between Spain and Argentina is set for the first weekend in December. Spain defeated the French side at home on the red clay, with Rafael Nadal proving to be the ace in the hole for the Spanish team.
Spain won their first two singles rubbers courtesy of Nadal and David Ferrer, but Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco were blown off the court by the French duo of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Michael Llodra.
Given Tsonga’s performance in doubles, French captain Guy Forget decided to play Tsonga in reverse singles in place of Gilles Simon. That decision did not help France’s cause.
Tsonga did not come close to Nadal in this match. The six-time French Open champion allowed Tsonga just 6 games in the 6-0, 6-2, 6-4 victory.
It was truly a dismal effort from the Frenchman, who couldn’t seem to keep the ball between the lines. The third set was slightly better from Tsonga, but only just, and at no time was Nadal in any danger of even dropping a set, much less losing the match.
