    9/19/11 9:47 PM | Ricky Dimon
Muller, Baghdatis advance to Metz second round Gilles Muller wins a tough opener in Metz over Philipp Petzschner on Monday. Muller is joined in the second round by Marcos Baghdatis, a straight-set winner over Matthias Bachinger.

    (8) Gilles Muller d. Philipp Petzschner 7-6(2), 7-6(5)

Muller may not have been the best player on the court in his first-round match at the Moselle Open on Monday night, but he won the big points and beat Petzschner in one hour and 45 minutes. In the opening set, Petzschner dropped only three points in six service games and had won eight more points than his opponent heading into the tiebreaker. Muller, though, jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the 'breaker and raced through it seven points to two.

Petzschner finally capitalized on his sixth break chance of the day at 3-2 in the second. The 65th-ranked German, though, cracked on serve for the first time while trying to close out the set at 5-3. Muller managed to force another tiebreaker, this time winning three fewer points during the set's 12 games. The world No. 49 surged to a 4-0 advantage, blew all of it for 4-4, but then set up match point at 6-5 with his eighth ace of the day. Muller got a look at a second serve and capitalized on it to clinch victory.

    Marcos Baghdatis d. Matthias Bachinger 7-5, 6-2

Baghdatis withstood a competitive start to the match then raced away from Bachinger and prevailed after one hour and 16 minutes of play. Bachinger fought off three break points early and even got a look at one set point in the opener with Baghdatis serving at 4-5, but the German saw his chance go by the wayside. That proved to be the turning point of the match, as Baghdatis held serve and never looked back.

The world No. 60 promptly broke his opponent for 6-5 and closed out set one on serve. With momentum in hand, Baghdatis went into cruise-control mode in the second. He broke immediately for a 1-0 lead and added another break later in the set just for good measure. Baghdatis dropped a mere two points in his last four service games and wrapped up the proceedings with a love hold at 5-2. Next up for the Cypriot is a second-round showdown with No. 3 seed Alexandr Dolgpolov.
