    Bucharest - Souza, Gil through to round two Brazilian Joao Souza is through to the second round in Bucharest, following his upset victory over tournament seed Tommy Robredo. Frederico Gil also advanced, having rallied to oust Jeremy Chardy in three sets.

    World No. 84 Joao Souza made a successful start to the tournament, having ousted fifth seed Tommy Robredo in straight sets. The 23-year-old secured three of 8 break points, en route to a 6-4, 7-6(5) victory in two hours and three minutes of play. With the win, Souza leveled his 2011 ATP World Tour record to 6-6.

    He is slated to face either wildcard Adrian Ungur or Lukas Rosol in the second round.

    Frederico Gil def. Jeremy Chardy 2-6, 6-4, 6-3

    Frederico Gil passed into round two after rallying to defeat Jeremy Chardy in three sets. The 27-year-old collected five aces and two service breaks, through to a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory in two hours and 15 minutes. Chardy, who had led the series 3-0, remains without a Tour-level win since July.

    Gil will take on either 8th seed Albert Montanes or qualifier Alessandro Giannessi for a place in the quarterfinal.
