  • Ferrer and Gasquet to collide in fifth rubber

    9/18/11 3:13 AM | Cheryl Murray
Ferrer and Gasquet to collide in fifth rubber If Rafael Nadal fails to win his match against Gilles Simon, David Ferrer and Richard Gasquet will take to the court to decide the winner.

Ordinarily, Gilles Simon would not be considered a threat to Rafael Nadal on a clay court. But with Nadal flying to Spain for the Davis Cup semifinals off a grueling US Open campaign, an upset is feasible. And if Simon pulls off the “unthinkable”, Spain will pin its hopes on David Ferrer.

The good news for the Spanish squad is that Gasquet matches up with Ferrer about as well as he matches up with Nadal. Ferrer owns a 5-1 head-to-head record over Gasquet, with the Spaniard winning their only clay court encounter way back in 2004 in Stuttgart.

Ferrer is one of the best defenders on the men’s tour, and unlike Nadal, he was ousted in the quarterfinals of the US Open. With more time to rest and adjust to the time chance in Spain, Ferrer should be well-positioned to take out Gasquet.
