  • Federer beats Tomic to prolong Switzerland-Australia tie

    9/18/11 5:24 AM | Ricky Dimon
Federer beats Tomic to prolong Switzerland-Australia tie Switzerland's Roger Federer takes care of Aussie youngster Bernard Tomic in four sets on Sunday in Sydney. The Davis Cup playoff tie now all comes down to Stanislas Wawrinka and Lleyton Hewitt.

    Switzerland is still alive.

Roger Federer faced a must-win situation and defeated Bernard Tomic 6-2, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 to level his country's playoff tie against Australia at 2-2 on Sunday afternoon at the Royal Sydney Golf Club. Federer prevailed after two hours and eight minutes, setting the stage for a decisive fifth rubber between Stanislas Wawrinka and Lleyton Hewitt.

With the pressure on, the world No. 3 came out firing and took control right from the start. He held three of his first four service games at love while dropping only three points on serve during the opening set. As a result, two breaks were more than enough for Federer to take a 5-2 lead and close it out on serve.

Tomic settled down in the second and made things competitive. The 18-year-old traded breaks with his opponent en route to 5-5, but he cracked for a fourth time late in the set. Federer struck at 5-5 then served it out for a two-set advantage.

Not about to go away quietly in front of a rowdy Aussie crowd, Tomic fought back in set three. The world No. 59 needed only one break to take it, as he fought off both of the break points he faced. A clutch service hold at 5-3 forced a fourth set.

Having been issued a challenge, Federer regained command in the fourth. The 16-time Grand Slam champion gave back an early break, but he broke right back midway through the set to assume the upper hand once more. This time Federer made no mistake with the lead and he wrapped up the proceedings with a routine hold at 5-3.

Federer, who went 2-0 in singles this weekend but lost the doubles point, finished with 43 winners and 35 unforced errors. Tomic, an even 1-1 for his weekend campaign, recorded 29 winners and 48 errors.

Ace match federer. ace.

Bad sportsmanship from Tomic at end. Didn't acknowledge Federer, a brief hand and then off.

Not well at all, and for the ozzie captain rafter to shout at umpire? why not the fine?

When Tomic?s serve triggered a beep? Rafter leapt to his feet to protest to chair umpire Alexandre Juge.

"Take it off now or I'll rip the bloody thing off," Rafter thundered before referee Javier Moreno intervened. Are captin's allowed to do this?

No maners at the golf club?

Fed must be so tired right now, but foug?t for his country and kinsmen. Respect to the greatest player of the century.

sienna, did you watch the match?

good luck to you darling.

Fleur , 9/18/11 5:40 AM

Federer fought for himself and for no one else! he is no Mr. arrogant for nothing.

phoenix , 9/18/11 6:25 AM

I did ont watch the match This really was in still of the night/ Hope Wawrinka will pull something of he lost the first.
Tomic has showed his temper before and Rafter being unsportmanslike is not helping for a young angry man. Roger is a class act and always puts tennis first,

Sienna , 9/18/11 6:59 AM

Federer Keep moving

hrsikesa , 9/18/11 7:30 AM

I don't understand what is the personal gain for federer playing this match... Davis Cup is as much a team game... Even though he was tired, he still played for 3 days... doubles & 2 singles to qualify for world group... @phoenix, your comment was unnecessary in this context...

RMadhu , 9/18/11 7:45 AM

has noth?ng better to do.

the arrogant one isn't here, zare is still asleep, snoring.

sienna, stanley is struggling, but he still could win. 5 sets is a big ask tho.

Just have to cheer forth and hope before zare gets here to muck it all over.

Fleur , 9/18/11 8:42 AM

It is necessary to answer the fool's claim that the arrogant one is doing it for "his country and kinsmen"...:-)

phoenix , 9/18/11 8:45 AM

Hu suspended. How in the heck can they schedule a two match day to be cancelled by the bad light?

Atleast Stan has turned it 5-3 up in the fifth, but I wonder if they suspended it when score was other way around.

Sienna , 9/18/11 10:03 AM

Australians are sore losers. This bad scheduling , picking a court to favour them and Rafter sledging "?Take it off now or I?ll rip the bloody thing off,? and now bad light. They will try hard to win dirty at any cost.

nirv02 , 9/18/11 10:07 AM

well done Roger, well done. class act. what joke 3 days.

phoenix is arrogant cheater Nadal's fan

as alwaysl lol

tennisnba , 9/18/11 11:05 AM

Sienna, I cannot believe my ears.

Watching match with stanley and hewitt. There was no bad l?ght. Why did they stop this? The reputation of Australian tennis is in disrespute. Bad light? I could see it as clear as daylight. Many tennis matches have gone into darkness. Real darkness and players have carried on.

I hope appeal is made soon. With stanley up 5:3. I Can?t blieve this.

Did Australians do this purposefully?

Fleur , 9/18/11 11:56 AM

Take it easy guys with the bad sportsmanship comments. I was there at the tie, and the reason Rafter was annoyed was because the net chord machine was going off without the ball coming anywhere close to the tape. It happened for the past two days of the Davis cup tie as well. Things only got worse after both Davis Cup captains agreed to continue play without the machine, because the very next point the umpire called a net chord after hearing the beep of the machine, when he had clearly told both captains that he had turned it off. That's why Rafter became incensed, because the umpire had lied about turning the machine off and tried to deny that he had called the net chord after hearing the beep from the machine. In the end the match official had to take the device from the umpire so that play could continue.

With regard to the comments about bad light, please remember that what is seen on tv is not necessarily the reality of the situation. It was pretty dark out there and I for one found difficulty in seeing the ball, let alone the players.

jrbro4 , 9/18/11 1:59 PM

Rafter became involved in a heated argument with referee Javier Moreno, accusing him of "just making shit up" as he instructed the players back on to court three times, after initially saying they would play only two more games, after Hewitt dropped for a 2-3 deficit.

Rafter declared a light meter - and not the referee's discretion - was a barometer to decide whether or not play should continue. "I had to try to get my message across and what is frustrating is that in tennis there is no light meter," he said.

jr, st?ll bad langage not accepted. It?s as bad as british no.1 on court, vile langage, all the time. Don?t expect from davis cup captain.

Fleur , 9/18/11 4:22 PM

jrbro4 - thanks a lot for the live report

are you going on Monday?

RickyDimon , 9/18/11 4:45 PM

I find it funny how the australians tried everything in their power to win the tie and will end up losing it to a tired roger and a one leged wawrinka.

Go mighty swiss. Just one more game.

bleck , 9/18/11 5:54 PM

Well Fed would tell Wawa that he is not there yet. It would be a great win they will be hailed in luke DC winners if they win for the first time against ozzie, whio ofcourse have DC in their vains.

Sienna , 9/18/11 10:36 PM

bleck - it's not funny at all that Australia is going to lose. They should have lost far worse than they did. Switzerland should have won 3-0. Tomic over Wawrinka was an upset and the doubles point was a MASSIVE upset.

Wawrinka is fine. He is just playing horrible tennis and using a VERY minor leg injury as an excuse. Hewitt, on the other hand, is playing with so many broken body parts that I can't even count them. If you watched his match against Wawrinka, you would know that he could barely move due to his foot injury.

Amazing that Australia almost won this.

RickyDimon , 9/18/11 11:43 PM

Thanks jrbro4, comment retracted , apologies asked

nirv02 , 9/19/11 12:40 AM

No problem guys, we are all passionate tennis fans after all. RickyDimon, in answer to your question, no I won't be attending the remainder of the match on Monday as I need to head back home to Melbourne, got to get back to Uni work as many assignments are due in the next few weeks.

jrbro4 , 9/19/11 2:07 AM

Well DC brings out thebest and the worst in people. Sometimes players and staf are losing themself in the proces. And the Ozzie do have a temper that will bring them lots of good but it easiley turns something that is not so good.
I'm glad Roger is back in the worldgroup and I dont know why people must be so hatefull against Wawrinka. He played with injection in foot and there really was no second choice like the serbs did have.

Remember these words the next time you have your orgasm while watching Rafa writhing in pain under the table.

sorry zare, i so loved your imagery that i have to plagiarize it...:-)

phoenix , 9/19/11 10:37 AM

"Remember these words the next time you have your orgasm while watching Rafa writhing in pain under the table."

The comments from some of you here is absolute classless gutter talk.

scoretracker , 9/19/11 11:15 AM

i agree, getting your pleasure from the pain of others is fit for the gutter...

phoenix , 9/19/11 12:14 PM

ricky- I have a different take on things. Federer surely wasn't at his best fitness wise, especially being 30 years old. Change of surface with virtually no time to adapt. Brutal time zone change. And yes wawrinka was injured and grass is his worst surface.

Tomic did very well in this years Wimbledon. I don't know if you expected wawrinka to beat tomic, I didn't. For me the doubles match was the pivotal one. I expected federer to win both matches as for wawrinka singles it could go either way. The doubles match was the one I tought the swiss would take.
So all in all I was looking for switzerland to go through but not in such easy fashion as you state.

Got to congratulate Stan the man for never giving up on the battle.

bleck , 9/19/11 2:22 PM

Bleck
I agree. And Ozzies are extremely dangerous in DC especially at home. They bring something else to the court and the Swiss did great to scrape out a victory. It was the first time they beat the Australian team. So big win indeed.

I remember when Fed floathed pas Nalbandian the comments on this site were that David should retire because he couldnot bring it anymore.
When Nadal played him a few weeks later and Nalbandian should have won the 1 and 3 set those same people were almost in awe of his current game.
And so on and on whenever Fed plays and wins it is because of the hasbeens
untill those hasbeens do a bit better against.....

Sienna , 9/19/11 9:15 PM

great post Sienna.

In news today, they say how popular federer is. The Ozzies love him and can't wait to have h?m back in Australia. He is most popular man behind Nelson Mandela. Roger is best.

We are luc?y as fans to be able to watch him and in awe overwhelm?ing awe of his status in the game.
