Davis Cup hopeful Argentina is through to face Spain in the final, after they clinched the tie over defending champion Serbia, 3-2. Juan Martin Del Potro scored the winning point, following the retirement of Novak Djokovic.
Argentina made the Davis Cup final on Sunday, by virtue of the retirement of World No. 1 Novak Djokovic. Opponent Juan Martin Del Potro had led by a set and 3-0 when Djokovic called it a day with a back injury.
The 24-year-old was unable to compete on Friday, but was deemed fit to play in the critical third singles rubber.
I feel very disappointed to end the tie in this way, I tried although I was only 60 percent fit and I got into the match knowing there was a risk of aggravating the injury which I first felt at the U.S. Open," Djokovic said.
"We knew my condition was not good but we believed that even so I would have a better chance against Del Potro than my team mate Viktor Troicki would, at the end of the day it was my decision and it backfired.
“I am not saying I would have won if I had been 100 percent fit because Del Potro played at a very high level today and never in my professional career did I struggle with my return of serve as I did today.”
“It was a great match to play in front of his crowd who were really fantastic, I really enjoyed playing here and we are going to Spain knowing that they are the favorites but hopeful that we can win finally the Davis Cup," Del Potro explained.
Argentina is slated to face four-time champion Spain later this year. Spain defeated France 4-1 over the weekend.

I think it is very arrogant of Novak to think that his 60% would be better than a 100% Troicski playing Del Potro. At least Troicski would have completed the match. Retirement should really be an option for an unexpected injury, not something that was fillblown and known to exist!

How exactly did Delpo score the winning point *after* Djokovic retired?
Btw, Novak was very gracious in his post match interview, saying the he might not have won even if healthy since Delpo played at a very high level.
I'm trying to ignore the hate post up top, but I suggest it be deleted. Even for here it's way over the top.

Novak really should not have played...but I guess the team decided otherwise
Would have loved to see Rafa vs Nole in a DC stage....not to be unfortunately
Also, while I completely believe that Nole must have been genuinely injured, but he is retiring much too often for a World No.1.....he sud be careful else he will carve an ugly reputation for himself.

Agree with RoseForRafa, arrogance, so much for team spirit.
So hypothetically he is saying his teammate is only 40% of him when he is not 100% fit. Self-centred.

Agree... Selfish... Viktor blew up his chances in first round, it would be fair to give him chance to come back against Delpo. Nobody had chances against Delpo... Not sure that even Novak had if 100% fit. Novak said that he in his professional career never had such problem returning serve...

The first post on here should be removed. It's extremely offensive.
