  • Hewitt, Wawrinka on course for likely fifth rubber

Hewitt, Wawrinka on course for likely fifth rubber Australia leads its Davis Cup playoff tie against Switzerland 2-1 heading into Sunday singles. With Roger Federer opening for the Swiss, the tie is expected to all come down to Lleyton Hewitt and Stanislas Wawrinka.

All signs point to a decisive Davis Cup singles rubber between Lleyton Hewitt and Stanislas Wawrinka.

Australia leads its playoff tie against Switzerland 2-1 heading into Sunday's reverse singles matches. The Swiss, however, have world No. 3 Roger Federer going for them in the opener against 18-year-old Bernard Tomic. Assuming Federer prevails, Hewitt and Wawrinka will take center stage with a spot in the 2012 World Group on the line.

Hewitt and Wawrinka have faced each other just once in their entire careers and that came four years ago on the hard courts of Cincinnati. A three-set thriller went in Hewitt's favor 7-5, 3-6, 7-6(5).

Now 30 years old, Hewitt appears to be wrapping up his career in unceremonious fashion. The former world No. 1 is toiling at No. 199 in the rankings due to a flurry of injuries, but it's clear that he is not done quite yet. After missing much of the hard-court summer--including the U.S. Open--Hewitt led Federer by a set and a break on Friday before succumbing 5-7, 7-6(5), 6-2, 6-3. He then teamed up with Chris Guccione on Saturday and beat Federer and Wawrinka for the crucial doubles point.

Wawrinka, meanwhile, could on the way to a remarkably bad weekend. Prior to the doubles setback, the world No. 19 fell to Tomic 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 in the opening singles rubber. The loss continues a downward spiral for Wawrinka that includes a first-round exit in Cincinnati and a five-set U.S. Open upset at the hands of Donald Young.

Australia has to like its chances if the tie goes five. Hewitt lives for these kinds of pressure moments while Wawrinka looks completely lost on the court right now and far from 100 percent physically. On grass and with an Aussie crowd behind him, Hewitt should triumph for the home team in four sets.
