  • Federer hopes to keep Swiss alive against Tomic

Federer hopes to keep Swiss alive against Tomic The burden of keeping Switzerland's 2012 Davis Cup World Group hopes alive falls on Roger Federer. His team trails 2-1 as the world No. 3 heads into a Sunday meeting with Bernard Tomic.

Switzerland is one loss away from going down in the Davis Cup playoffs and missing out on a spot in the 2012 World Group. Such is the Swiss' fate after Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka lost to Australia's Lleyton Hewitt and Chris Guccione 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, 7-6(5) in Saturday's doubles rubber at the Royal Sydney Golf Club.

Now it's up to Federer to keep his country alive as he is set for a first-ever clash against Bernard Tomic on Sunday.

The world No. 3 appears to be in decent shape after losing a heartbreaker to Novak Djokovic in the U.S. Open semifinals last weekend, although clearly not in top form. Prior to the doubles setback, Federer found himself trailing Hewitt by a set and a break on Friday before storming back to win 5-7, 7-6(5), 6-2, 6-3.

Tomic is obviously a massive underdog, but he has to be feeling good playing at home and on grass. The 18-year-old made a surprising run to the Wimbledon quarterfinals this summer and he defeated Wawrinka 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 in the opening singles rubber on Friday. Tomic is 11-10 at the ATP level in 2011 and he registers at a career-high ranking of 59th in the world.

''I just pray that he doesn't like my game," Tomic said of Federer. "If he likes it, then I'm screwed.''

The outlook may not be quite that dire, but his prospects certainly aren't good. Federer won't get put to sleep--like Wawrinka did--by Tomic's offspeed mix of spins and slices. With a match under his belt and the U.S. Open becoming more and more a thing of the past, Federer should cruise in no more than four sets.

"If he likes it, then I'm screwed"
It's kind of refreshing to read that since I don't often hear teenage professional tennis players talk like real teenagers. At least Tomic's got some personality.

Hmmm I think Ricky...you are giving to much credit to Tomic... one set... that would be something...
But it's not enough, I mean Fed will just cruise here... but Wawa?
Hewitt has a chance.
I like DC...one great player is not enough... Serbia won after DC, thanks to Troicki and Tipsy. Ofc Nole is always there for two points ( just like Fed for Swiss)... but 1 more game has to be taken.
I have feeling that Hewitt will regain something of his old glory tomorrow

Tomic probably won't get a set

the point is he has a REMOTE chance of taking a set only because Federer is "banged up." But he has no chance of taking more than one.

Ace match federer. ace.

Bad sportsmanship from Tomic at end. Didn't acknowledge Federer, a brief hand and then off.

Not well at all, and for the ozzie captain rafter to shout at umpire? why not the fine?

When Tomic?s serve triggered a beep? Rafter leapt to his feet to protest to chair umpire Alexandre Juge.

"Take it off now or I'll rip the bloody thing off," Rafter thundered before referee Javier Moreno intervened. Are captin's allowed to do this?

No maners at the golf club?

Fed must be so tired right now, but foug?t for his country and kinsmen. Respect to the greatest player of the century.

sienna, did you watch the match?

good luck to you darling.
