Bernard Tomic overcomes Stanislas Wawrinka in four sets on Friday in Sydney. The victory gives host Australia a 1-0 lead in its Davis Cup playoff tie against Switzerland.
Home-court advantage plus the combination of Bernard Tomic and Stanislas Wawrinka on a grass court proved to be a winning recipe for Australia.
Tomic took care of Wawrinka 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 on Friday afternoon at the Royal Sydney Golf Club to give the host Australians a 1-0 advantage over Switzerland in a Davis Cup playoff tie. The 18-year-old put his country on the scoreboard after two hours and 32 minutes of play.
Wawrinka briefly silenced the crowd by getting off to a fast start. The 19th-ranked Swiss dropped only six points in his first five service games, so one break was easily enough for him to take the opening set.
The rest of the way, though, it was all Tomic. The world No. 59 seized the momentum with a set-clinching break at 5-4 in the second and he did not look back.
Tomic gave an early break back in the third, but he never fully relinquished his advantage. To the delight of the Aussie fans, Tomic continued to out-smart and out-steady his opponent in rallies. Wawrinka's mounting unforced error count led to another break, after which Tomic served out set three at 5-3.
Wawrinka all but disappeared in the fourth. He donated an early break, then found himself trailing 0-40 at 3-5 and staring three match points in the face. Wawrinka managed to save all three, but Tomic capitalized on his fourth opportunity with a crushing winner.
"It's a huge thing," Tomic said of the Davis Cup. "It's a huge honor. I'm just happy with the way I played today."

Ednumbers I read your comment! And you speak in a tone towards me like you are mother Theresa! Shame on you. Penalty point and 1.500 dollars fine.

Gr8 play by Tomic after a very disappointing USOpen. As for Wawrinka, down the greasy pole he goes....and down....
